I don't think this has been asked about yet. And given the context, it might be sensitive, but...
Gordon, who's Polly?
Gordon: She was our youngest sister... They would call her Pretty Polly ... But Polly is her name... She was the first one to get scrapped in the incident, that's what Spencer told.. only 5 years old... She was probably so scared ...
The Flying Scotsman, who had come for a visit, was confused.
"What was who like?"
"Our siblings."
It was an unexpected question of Gordon to ask anything of his late brothers and sisters, everyone knew this was a heavy topic for him, and aside from once, no one ever asked him about what his family might have been like.
Scotsman had been largely taken back by that statement.
"You want to know what the other A3s were like?"
"What other reason would I ask about it for?"
"I know, but, its just-"
"So sudden?
"Yeah."
"Well I decided that it was time to know what my siblings were like, I can't keep hiding from it forever."
"Well," Scotsman started "For one, their names didn't fit them, Sandwich was one of the smartest blokes and engine could know, and Gay Crusader was about as straight as his rods. Pretty Polly was always dirty, no matter how many times she would be cleaned and polished, she would be could be dirty in at least the next hour, not matter what."
Gordon let out a chuckle, "They sounded like an eccentric bunch."
"More than you could ever imagine." Scotsman said, a faraway look in his eyes.
The rest of the night was joined by other engines, and their tales of siblings, cousins and family.
British hosiery manufacturer Pretty Polly used to make these charming lace stop stockings, which featured their "PP" logo in the welt. It seems Pretty Polly discontinued these gems in the 1990s.
Sadly, Pretty Polly themselves ceased trading and entered liquidation on 14 May 2026 - another victim of poor state support of home grown manufacturers and the endless dressing down of many consumer societies today. A tragic loss of a company founded in 1919.
I saw a recent pair of designs for Gordon's little sisters, Bonny and Polly Gresley, and it reminded them of some designs I half finished last year that I had only shared with a friend on Discord. Inspired, I finished their designs, and now I have them here for you all to see.
WARNINGS: Character deaths, characters have different fates to real life.
"Blink" Bonny Gresley:
Bonny was the elder of the sisters and became a protector of her younger siblings and cousins. Though she was a heavy-set girl and was charitably referred to by others as plain, she matched it with a huge heart. Some have theorised that Bonny may have suffered from some form of autism, which has been backed up by some things stated by Mallard in interviews. Mallard refers to her as his favourite cousin, claiming that she 'understood' him as a child and credits Bonny as the one who taught him 'coping' techniques that she herself used to calm down. But Bonny was never tested in her lifetime, and her brothers - Gordon and Flying Scotsman - have always believed that she would not have wanted to be.
Lacking the pompous arrogance of her elder brothers, Bonny had a reputation for being blunt and no-nonsense and for treating people in kind. There are even instances where Bonny appeared to have formed friendships with a few of the new diesels.
Bonny was one of the first Gresley siblings to meet her end. She lost control at high speed while pulling a heavy goods train and derailed, being killed upon impact. This was chalked up as an accident for many years, but upon the discovery that plans had been made to scrap Bonny within the year, along with unusually unanimous testimony from her surviving trucks and Break Van, it is now theorised that Bonny may have planned her accident as a means to go out on her own terms. Both Mallard and her brother Gordon have both expressed beliefs that this sounds very much like something Bonny would do.
Bonny was always very close with her sister, Polly, against whom she held no resentment for her beauty. She did not survive to meet her niece.
Polly Gresley was famous for being a great beauty, which would only be rivalled by her cousin Rhianna (who is now known as Ryan) but never beaten. You would be forgiven for thinking that she would be vain and possibly lazy, but you would be wrong. Polly hated her beauty and the way she was treated for it. Unlike her brother, Polly would demand that she be allowed to pull goods trains, complaining that she was being asked to pull coaches simply because everyone thought she was dainty and too proud to get dirty. Polly was very involved in social issues of the day and defied tradition by wearing trousers instead of a skirt or dress. Many said she was born a generation too late and would have made a fine suffragette - a movement she held a lifelong admiration for.
Polly died shortly after her older sister's accident. Polly had fallen for and married a member of the Bulleid family and gave birth to a baby girl, Rebecca. Following the birth, she suffered from complications and underwent surgery to correct them. From this surgery, she developed an infection and died shortly after.
In my AU, Rebecca is the daughter of Polly Gresley, which is the reason she comes to Sodor. Gordon was also aware of the deaths of his sisters as he was notified but was not told of his brothers' deaths until years later. Flying Scotsman took the deaths of his sisters particularly hard, as he was unable to come home at the time.
Not to be that person... but I am going to be that person. My OTP from Old Gods of Appalachia is Miss Belle x Pretty Polly Barrow. If there is someone who change Pretty Polly, it's going to be Miss Belle.
