Prompt #2 : Qualms

Prompt #2 : Bargain - @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast

The knowledge pricked at him.  Or rather the lack of knowledge.  A few fulms down a hall and through a door was the total distance Edarien had to go to gain what he wanted.

Immortality.  

That’s what he wanted.  And Priarch had stumbled over the best lead he’s had in decades.  

Gloved hands rubbed over his face.  He exhaled a long sigh.  From where he sat behind his desk in his office, Edarien had ample view of Squee sprawled on the couch.  A bag of nuts someone left on his desk was the voidsquirrel’s most recent prize.  One nut thunked to the floor and rolled a short ways, Squee hot on its trail.

Edarien sighed again.  Long fingers drummed on the arm of his chair.  

One conversation was all he needed. Why did the man even remain here?  With that viera woman that irritated every living thing within a breath of her.  He’d throw her out if it didn’t mean losing his lead on the final cup.  He had two.  How could the third elude him so horribly while being under his nose?

Another nut bounced off the marble floor, clattering to a halt when it collided against Edarien’s boot.  He nudged the nut with the toe of his boot and sent it rolling back towards the voidsquirrel leaping back and forth from the floor to the couch.  Squee was well aware of his master’s mood. He knew better than to get in range of those boots.

Edarien pushed to his feet.  His hand trailed along the edge of the desk as he swept around the side of it.  His robes rustled with his steps, the heels of his boots an audible click on the floor tiles.   

One conversation.  He could have one conversation.

The cell was blessedly lacking of Ester when Edarien arrived. He dismissed the guard on duty, resuming responsibility for their guest himself.  Who would tell him no in his own place of business?

“Good evening,”  The voice that spoke was smooth as silk, rich as dark chocolate melting on the tongue.  “Edarien Secariot, I presume.”  

An elezen rose from the bed.  Lean and elegant, Arafel de Courcelle cut a fine figure even after days, weeks, in a cell.  A momentary pang of guilt struck Edarien, a sensation he quickly buried beneath the loft of his nose in the air and a slight sniff.  “Mm, yes. Lord de Courcelle, is it not?”

Arafel inclined his head.  “You have that correct.  How may I be of service to you?”

Edarien could feel Arafel’s gaze on him, could feel the curiosity of that look like a brand on his flesh.  A gloved hand smoothed down over his robe’s sleeve.  “The title you hold is a very old one.  One that has long since been out of use for nearly three centuries in Ishgardian society, from what I can tell.  Curious that you’d claim such in this day and age, Lord Courcelle.”

“That is not why you are here, Edarien Secariot.”  Arafel stepped forwards, a pale hand reaching to catch Edarien by the elbow.  He spun the duskwight to face him.  “You know, don’t you?”

“Mm,”  Edarien stared into the eyes that met his with such ease.  Red.  Arafel’s eyes were the colour of darkening blood.  “You drank from them.  You must have.  This price you pay though was not the outcome that should have happened.  So why?  Why this farce of life?”

A smile spread across Arafel’s lips, and he nodded once.  He didn’t loosen his grip on Edarien, instead he dragged him closer until they stood chest to chest, lips a scarce ilm apart from one another.  Edarien’s breath hitched in his throat.  

Oh, but how warm Edarien seemed to Arafel.  Alive, silver skin flush with a life that beckoned to Arafel to taste.  A hand rose to sweep blue-black hair back over Edarien’s shoulder.  The wealth of dense locks tumbled loose down his back.  

“I did not complete the ritual.” Arafel stated plainly.  “Unlike you, Edarien, I did not have all three cups in my possession, and in my ignorance, mistakes were made.  Lives taken and changed for my vanity.  Lives I can not go back to unwind and set right again.  My own life amongst them.”

His feet refused to move.  Edarien couldn’t find the will to shift away from the pale hand that continued to trail his touch along the duskwight’s silvery skin.  His eyes narrowed in recognition of something unnatural at work.  “I have what you want.”

Arafel’s lips quirked upwards.  A single nod given.  “And I have what you want.  So, Edarien Secariot of Priarch Enterprises, let us make a deal, shall we?  I promise to make it a lively bargain.”
