My top 5 characters from Arslan Senki (The Heroic Legend of Arslan)

Since everyone's talking about their top favorite characters from Arslan Senki manga/anime here are my top 5. (I could say top 10 but it's hard to choose as there are so many characters I just like equally in here.)

1. Arslan - My boy!! 💜 The reason I began to watch the anime and read the manga actually. I want to hug him. 😭

2. Daryun - what can I say, I love parent figures who are protectors and knights and who are super loyal to their prince/kings.

3. Narsus - He is the next person I liked when I watched the anime first. Just love his cleverness (his strategies are so cool!!) and love the jokes about his painting talents too!!

4. Elam - Oh Arslan's first friend. I love his friendship with Arslan. 😭 (funny how he was initially like distant to Arslan because of their difference in status then they became the best of friends!! )

5. Jaswant - again love his loyalty to Arslan!! Oh how he ended up coming to Arslan's side despite being from other kingdom and became like super loyal to him!! And also how they related to each other for being adopted and not ever seeing their real parents. (Jaswant had a far better adoptive parent though. 🥲)

I love many other characters but I can't say whom i like more than the other but anyway special mention : Azrael (that bird is just amazing and crazily smart !! I liked him the first time I saw him!! )

I know my tops are very general and not unique since most of the time I do kind of tend to like Mcs first if i like a media a lot.

My top 10 characters from The Heroic Legend of Arslan/Arslan Senki series

This manga/anime is one of my top hyperfixations, now let’s dive in! This list down here is by no means a ranking, I’m just listing them from memory!

Etoile/Estelle/Ester. I just really like the concept of a character fighting on the wrong side of the main Pars-Lusitania war. Throughout the anime they did have the character arc of questioning their main religion and true goal of their kingdom. I also like to headcanon that they also think about what truly makes a knight. I tend to keep calling them Ester sry ArSen fandom. I’ve now headcanoned them as demigender and their pronouns are He/She/They. They will end up befriending a lot of my ArSen OCs in my main AU, tales of the Azat Children.

Arslan. I do think he’s a pretty unique shounen manga protagonist. He’s someone who prefers words and nonviolence over just action and pure strength. He does start to question his own kingdom’s perspective on slavery, and ends up wanting to abolish it as the story progresses and become a ruler his people can grow to trust. He is also a huge animal person, through his relationship with Azrael and encounter with a dromedary camel in the anime’s very first ending. Elam. I liked how there was another Young Adult character in Arslan’s growing allies. I also like his own character arc of learning to trust and befriend Arslan, especially when the latter saved his life from Lusitanian soldiers. He does have an interesting and unique relationship with my main OC, Sadiqa.

Alfarīd. I think she’s an interesting character, yet doesn’t seem to have a major role as the story progresses in the manga and in the second half of Season 1. I am 100% not interested in her whole infatuation with Narsus. I hope that there’s still time in the story for her to defend and support her own clan with Merlane. I do think that her rivalry with Elam is pretty entertaining to see. She’ll also get an animal sidekick like Arslan and Daryun.

Jaswant. I remembered his involvement throughout the Sindhura arc, I love a man respecting the memory of his first guardian, then growing into protecting Arslan and his Allies. (I really wish that both the anime and manga had them be characters of color based on the Time period they’re in!). I really hope he survives the latest arc!

Azrael. HE IS THE BEST BORB! Sir, that is my emotional support attack hawk! I live in an area where my folks and I see a lot of red tailed hawks diving for their prey, so I did end up with a great respect for him. I really loved that he and Arslan reunited at Peshawar fortress.

Kishward, Lady Nasrin, and Ayyar! The best family in the whole manga! I love how caring both Kishward and his wife are towards their son! I love how they served as a hidden foil to Andragoras III, Tehamenay and Arslan’s whole family dynamic. Currently praying that nothing bad better happen to Kishward in the latest chapters

Hilmes and Irina’s relationship. Their relationship is my Ancient Persian Empire!(Heh, See what I did there?). I love that Irina accepted Hilmes for who he truly is, because he treated her like a person and not a hindrance. I love that Hilmes respected her and taught her about the world she couldn’t see because of her blindness. I am weak from the hidden kiss scene in the anime! If there’s a kingdom that Hilmes can help rule with its last living princess Irina, it would definitely be Maryam.

Asim, Kirs and Bolna. Aka the three kids that tried physically harassing Etoile in the first chapter and episode in the anime. Spoilers if you haven’t seen the anime: I know they didn’t survive the battle of Atropatene in the anime. I was relieved and surprised to see all 3 of them alive in Gilan. They are also a huge inspiration for a majority of my OCs and I’m thinking of including them in my AU

Lord Hodir’s 13 year old daughter. The only and seemingly alive heir of Hodir’s family. She was also the only relative he mentioned in both the anime and manga, despite the depiction of her in a drawing seen in the anime’s 4 koma shorts. It’s odd that we never see and learn about Hodir’s spouse and if he had any other living relatives aside from his daughter. Maybe it’s because that despite the cast bloat, it’s still story driven to Arslan’s whole character arc. Anyhoo, hippity hoppity, I’ll get to drawing and developing her in my main AU

Honorable Mentions: Daryun, Narsus, the Kingdom of Türk(I have an OC from there!) Jovanna, Asim, Bolna and Kirs’ parents in the anime’s first episode, Tus, Souroush, Farangis(I have plans to redesign her!), Kshaeta(anime exclusive Marzban in ep 2), Sām.

The Harnāk at Shahristan

I was rereading some chapters of the manga when this particular page caught my attention: 

Chapter 68 tells about the events leading to the attack of the Keep of Saint Emmanuel and, as the title itself says, about the hunting party held by the parsian army in the fields of Shahristan. Here’s the description of the event from the manga:

“On the twentieth day of the fifth month the parsian army took up position north of the Keep of Saint Emmanuel, in the fields of Shahristan. Spanning five farsangs east to west and four farsangs north to south, the plains of Shahristan are counted as one of Pars’ five great hunting grounds. It is a bountiful land teeming with game. The parsian army held a harnāk - hunting party - here before the battle to come. This celebration was a show of strength aimed at the lusitanian army shut up inside the Keep of Saint Emmanuel, a notice of the imminent restoration of the throne to the people of Pars, an offering of animals in prayer for divine protection from the Gods, and to the soldiers, it was an important opportunity to improve their horsemanship and archery. Arslan and his companions were enjoying the hunt in small groups of 100 or 200 cavalrymen.”

Considering the circumstances, the image introducing the chapter title, a bas-relief portraying a young man hunting, is more than fitting. I honestly don’t know if the topic has already been discussed by someone else, or by official means, but I can’t help noticing a certain similarity with Arslan himself.

First of all, they’re both young men, with shoulder-length hair.

Secondly, in the bas-relief the hunter is carrying a sword which is basically identical to Arslan’s.

Also, a headgear similar to the one the hunter is wearing has already been used to symbolize a crown (chapter 44), which could mean the young man bears a royal title.

I wonder if H. Arakawa’s intention was to simply introduce the chapter in a suitable way, or if she wanted to portray some sort of legendary legacy Arslan might have left.

Perhaps, after the reconquering of the Capital and defeat of Lusitania, in the tales passed down over the next generations, what happened during the Harnāk at Shahristan became a sort of mythical/legendary battle, something so historically and culturally significant that it had to be carved on stone.

Perhaps that bas-relief doesn’t depict any royal hunter, but is an artistic portrayal of young Prince Arslan during one of the most important phases of his ascent to the throne.

… or maybe it’s just my archaeologist self taking over and making me overthink and imagine things.
