So here's a Prince who is basically a damsel in distress locked up in his palace and a noble lady who goes around challenging the patriarchal norms and will be the knight of the Prince.

Why did I not even going through the synopsis of this drama. This is already so good.

For someone who has been watching dramas for years I am always late to the game. I recently watched the 2019 Netflix drama Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung starring Shin Se Kyung and Cha Eun Woo and I adored this show! I purposely skipped over this show because I have been hesitant in watching anything of Shin Se Kyung since  A Girl Who Sees Smells (2015) and the final nail in the coffin The Bride of Water God (2017)- the show was so bad I couldn’t watch any actor who participated in it for years, I only watch Nam JooHyuk in School Nurse Files (2020) and I have a good experience with him in other dramas- and I’m not the biggest fan of Cha Eun Woo, I don’t think he is bad but he is only as good as the actors around him, so I just skipped over this drama. I finally picked up Run On (2020) during its run which starred Shin Se Kyung and Yim Si Wan ( who I haven’t seen in any of his dramas before), and I completely fell in love with Shin Se Kyung. I couldn’t believe I avoided her for so long.

I recently decided to pick up Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung, an ahistorical drama taking place in Joseon sometime in the late 1700s about newly stated female historians in the court. Touching on liberal ideas of equality (both class and gender), science, the truth, and who writes history. I adored Goo Hae Ryung and Shin Se Kyung brought a nice balance of intelligence and fire to the character. I loved the group of historians and the continuous discussion of the role of those who observe history, and it heavily reminded me of discussions of journalists and should they just be observers. Officer Min (Lee Ji Hoon) and Hae Ryung were set up as obvious foils to this debate.

I adore how they depicted female coworker friendships, and could have made Goo Hae Ryung, "not like other girls" but they didn’t. All the women in the show had a mind of their own, a goal, and ambition. Even the crown princess was shown in a sympathetic light and a victim of the time. The depiction of women in the show helped highlight the themes of fate and desire, what society wants from a person, and what a person wants for themselves.

This leads to Lee Yim, his entire character goal was to gain freedom. Freedom from the court, duty as the prince, and from the scornful eye of the King. It was interesting to see a male character be a romance obsessed, naive prince, with very little experience. And Cha Eun Woo sells it, I liked him in this role and have a hard time seeing anyone else play this role. This is interesting because he always plays tsundere types like in the 2018 drama My ID is Gangnam Beauty ( which is a very good drama) and True Beauty (2020). I prefer him playing this kind of naive and sweet role it suits him well. But his development and fight for both freedom and love for Hae Ryung were deeply moving and sweet and I just loved his development.

This brings us to the romance between him and Hae Ryung with a few spoilers for the latter half of the show. Some people I saw didn’t like the romance in the show, but I liked it. The show doesn’t change with it, and it could almost be the same without it. Except for one thing towards the end which follows Hae Ryung’s development. Lee Yim is set to be married, which cuts off the blooming romance between them short. And you have this discussion of a career driven woman vs wife, Hae Ryung loves her job and work and being a historian, but she also loves Lee Yim. But she can’t have them both, if she becomes his wife she’ll have to give up her career. And this is a predicament which many women even today find themselves in, the love of their career and having a family. And the unfairness of having to choose, none of the men would have to make this choice they can have it all ( in this matter) but due to the fact she is a woman, and one of the first female historians there is this pressure. And I’m so glad that they touched on this.

The next thing I loved is the ending! They do get to have it all (to a certain extent). It was so cathartic to watch. Lee Yim was able to travel, escape his duty as a prince, stay with his small found family ( the eunuch, and the two court ladies), and be with the one he loved. Hae Ryung gets to continue to be a historian, be respected, have her love, and not be married. The Crown prince was able to be King and rule fairly. The crown princess escaped her marriage. Officer Min got to continue being a historian. Etc, etc. it was all so satisfying.

Overall despite how it seemed Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung was such a good drama full of friendship, family ( even unrelated), female friendships, and empowerment, with nice humor and romance around the serious and interesting political plot.
