A tribute to the strange relationship between a jazz maverick and an electro ponce, as told through a playlist entirely composed of songs by Prince

It’s no secret that Vince and Howard have radically different ideas about music. What do an electro ponce and jazz maverick listen to together? Well, it’s my headcanon that they BOTH love Prince. He’s got enough of a jazz-funk fusion soul to satisfy Howard’s jazzy cravings, while being drenched in enough synth-pop kitsch to appeal to Vince. So here’s my contribution to Bringing Back the Boosh Day 3, Music: an all-Prince playlist!

Strange Relationship, Sign o’ the Times, 1987: To celebrate the strange relationship Vince and Howard share

“Controversy”, Controversy, 1981: Vince’s anthem. An ode to being yourself despite the haters.

“Girls and Boys,” Parade, 1986: “He’s only known her for a little while, but he’s grown accustomed to her style[...] Meet me in another world baby, space and joy”. Could anything be more Boosh? 

“Kiss”, Under The Cherry Moon, 1990: Because Howard doesn’t need to be rich, beautiful, or cool to rule Vince’s world 

“Let’s Work”, Controversy, 1981: A nod to the fact that Vince and Howard work together

“Just As Long As We’re Together”, For You, 1978: Because every problem Vince and Howard have ever had starts when they turn on each other. Just as long as they’re together, everything’s all right.

“When Doves Cry (Extended Version)”, Purple Rain, 1984: Howard’s song, because he’s never satisfied

“U Got The Look”, Sign O’ the Times, 1987: Because Howard loves Vince’s look.

“Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?”, Prince, 1979: Why do the boys treat each other so bad, indeed?

“When You Were Mine”, Dirty Mind, 1980: A song for the three minutes Howince was canon. “When you were mine, you were kinda sorta my best friend”.

“In Love”, For You, 1978: A total bop about falling in love deeper every day

“If I Was Your Girlfriend”, Sign O’ the Times, 1987: My all-time favorite Prince song, and a bittersweet song about pining for your best friend who’s hopelessly straight.

Trivia: I never got to met Prince (who has been my favorite musician since I was like 12 or something). Anyway, on a musical trip to Minneapolis, I was in his nightclub (where I met a few members of his band and a cast member from Graffiti Bridge who was performing). I was in the gift shop and his jacket--this one--was on display. I don’t remember all that was said, but I know, being as small as Prince, something transpired and they took the jacket down from the display and let me try it on. I think they did so because everyone there that knew Prince wished I could have met him but he was out of town. Personally, I think it was (as it was when I met Bunny Wailer, friend and bandmate of Bob Marley) because I was small like him and I wondered if they thought it would be cool for Prince to meet an adult woman that was shorter than he was. 😁

Either way, I’m glad because I have something to remember Prince forever.
