Words are Deeds, Phillips, 11 July – 25 August 2017
Language has long been understood as a central part of artistic expression, dating back to the earliest illuminated manuscripts of the middle ages. In Words and Deeds, Bonami imagines the exhibition as a conversation, or a visual soundtrack, with meaning constructed through each different work. Every work expresses individuality and identity: just like words, they can connect to form phrases, or stand alone to communicate powerful meaning.
Pretty loose exhibition premise, though there’s some nice work in there.
Gambaroff uses newspapers and catalogues in a similar way to Laura Owens. Might be useful in articulating the newspaper aspect of the cryptics.
