hi! i've wondered about this, and a post on reddit reminded me. have cornrows ever been seen in history as a hairstyle (i.e. Tuoba Yu in Princess Weiyoung), or is it just dramas pulling random crap out of their butts? (of course, Princess Weiyoung has pretty inaccurate costuming as far as my untrained eye can tell so...)
Hi, thanks for the question. I assume you're referring to this hairstyle?
Source here
Tuoba Yu (?) from Princess Weiyoung.
The costumes in Princess Weiyoung do look like generic guzhuang so the likelihood of this hairstyle being historically accurate is small. Though the story is set in the Northern and Southern dynasties period (Medieval), maybe it was a thing in that particular time. To my knowledge, cornrows were not worn by Chinese men in the Ming, Qing and 20th century. I’m definitely not the right person to ask for Northern and Southern dynasties stuff, maybe @ziseviolet or @fouryearsofshades knows about this?
So. Zhang Tianyang in Princess Weiyoung. He’s so handsome! Handsomest prince!
But he’s such a tool. Like a whole toolbox.
He’s not even scheming or anything this episode (as far as I remember) but he’s still like this through his scenes:
Alas. Handsomest prince is worst prince.
well someone had to be the himbo of the show and he took on that role with pleasure
left no crumbs

Just finished watching "The Princess Weiyoung" on Netflix and I'm trying not to burst in tears... omfg.
Touba Jun! And omg Touba Di and Li MinDe!
This took a long time to think about because outfits on tv are for the most part, intentional so when they’re bad they’re meant to be (for the most part). I likely don’t have 10 of each but anyway here goes. I’ll start with worst to end on a good note. In no particular order:
Bonnie. They did ol girl dirty.
Like what the fuck is THIS ill fitting thing?
Wes. I get he’s supposed to be poor but jesus christ.
Between the jacked up hair and too big pants and everything...some poor folks don’t be wearing plaid guys. Why is PLAID always an indicator of (lack of) wealth? LOL. My DAD wears shirts like this. And this is probably his size. They’re DROWNING my boy.
Basic Laurel.
Every. Single. Character. On. This. Show. Looking like a whole medieval reinactment at the park.
Holy Forever 21 Batman
Is this prom or medieval europe?
WhatEVER the fuck THIS drama was about. Cheap and cringy
Lmao my man Clark. They really beat us to death with the fucking plaid. Working class folks wear other things LOL.
Okay Best dressed. Again no particular order.
Blair honestly informed post catholic high school uniform fashion awakening.
Some Serena outfits
THIS, is a period outfit.
Obviously.
Both of them.
Some of their outfits, sometimes.
Lady Chabi. Win
This entire cast
Everyone on this show too
Her outfits were great the whole show.
And that’s 10!
