K so, I'm kind of getting to a point with c-dramas where I need them to make a decision. I have liked The First Jasmine up until now. I've thought it was fresh and interesting despite still adhering to the tropes of the genre, but the "I guess we have to divorce" angle almost NEVER works for me. I think the only time I thought it made sense was Sword and the Brocade where that man DID NOT want ShiYi in his house. But in so many of the more recent dramas, it feels like the writers want the best of both worlds. They want the characters to fall in love and be together, and they also want the characters or their circumstances to be really good too. The problem with that, is it makes the reason for divorce feel contrived and it usually ends up being the weakest part of the drama because after a while you KNOW they're going to get back together. So either the stakes of this parting have to be so high that you genuinely aren't sure they're going to make it back to each other, or you forego the trope altogether, because I for one, am TIRED of the "convenient and at this point irrelevant misunderstanding that would be easily solved if we just talked it out." It's EXHAUSTING honestly, because I don't believe it, and then the subsequent episodes until they finally talk it through always feels like such a waste of everyone's time.
