I don't think it's just a convention thing.
The necklace is a clearly decorative metallic ring with a few frills on the sides, and the length around the neck is a pretty heavy duty chord. Much more expensive than something a con run by a company as cheap as Creation Entertainment would give out, even to its guests.
It looks clearly decorative, rather than functional.
In my Women of Trek photo op, Denise is the only one wearing the necklace. If it was just a con thing, wouldn't Nichelle, Marina, and Nana also be wearing the necklace?
With how loving the cast is, would we really be surprised if they had matching necklaces?
