Blue Buttoned Nursing Chair

This gorgeous round seated chair came to me in 2015 as part of a suite. It had been previously reupholstered but not for some time. Built circa 1900 with walnut inlay and turned front legs I knew it would be a pretty piece to work with.

I stripped back the frame to the bare bones and gave the woodwork a revive and wax.

Using traditional, natural materials of Coir (coconut husk), hessian and linen scrim I began to rebuild the shape of the chair which I found to be an incredibly rewarding process as it had such lovely curves to work with.

There were features of the upholstery that I really liked and wanted to retain such as the piped edge around the edge of the seat and the deep buttoning on the back. The front edge had originally been pleated but to cut down on the bulk created by this process I used pin tucks instead which gave a similar texture and appearance without the mass of fabric.

This chair was covered in a combination of a napped ‘Pechmelba’ by Kobe Interiors and a printed Linen by Ada and Ina on the back, buttons and piping.

It has pride of place in the sitting room of an Edwardian terraced house in Bristol.
