Yesterday we popped into the MassArt printshop for a studio visit. It is hands down the biggest and most beautiful printshop around - these photos barely do it justice (we only really focused on the screenprinting wing). As many who have studied print know it’s heartbreaking to say goodbye to your facilities when you graduate, this one would be especially hard!
We posted a teaser on instagram of our tour around the Glasgow School of Art etching and silkscreen shops last week but now it's time for a much more satisfying peek into where the magic happens. British art schools certainly take silkscreen more seriously then their US counterparts and always have proper vacuum graphics print tables (often British brand, Kippax) in studios. No messing around with hinges on tables here!
Also, love the guillotine in the washroom situation.
Having been established nearly 10 years ago the Greenpoint Gallery precedes all the buzz that has recently come to surround Greenpoint and its seemingly endless supply of new restaurants/stores/bars/tattoo parlors/co-working spaces/artists.
The gallery and bar area are absolutely mental, which one would expect from a space whose director, Shawn James is (amongst other things) a theatrical set designer. SAIC grad and current resident of the gallery building, Jason Tudor has recently set up a print shop on the ground floor and we dropped by to take a look.
While it's always fun to check out impossibly slick printing set-ups, it's equally enjoyable to see a total ground-up printshop build like Jason has going in Greenpoint. Shower stall as a wash-out booth? Who knew!
These guys are also starting to run print workshops in the space that you can get info about on the website.
A visit to Haven Press was long overdue for us. Run by a dear friend, Mark Herschede, this printmaking workspace and contract printing/publishing shop is based in Williamsburg is as literally choc full o' the coolest print equipment. Have a look and see if you can find Darryl Hannah, the canine studio manager peeping in the last photo!
A little tour of the screenprinting studios at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts here in Boston. They've got a nice set-up and as always in school shops, plenty of fun signage and sage advice.
