This is a great blog with a lot of good links on an issue I feel strongly about.

At my store, we are constantly asked why we don't have a large selection of computer programming books. Unfortunately, the speed of change has made computer books increasingly challenging to publish in print economically and keep on the shelf physically at retail. An important market for these physical books, however, is prisoners. Time and timeliness are less important under their circumstances, but having and maintaining a foundation of what is going on in the industry outside their walls is crucial.

Making books available for prisoners has always been complicated, particularly books that can help prisoners prepare for work post incarceration.

In Memoriam of the Convict Scholar - JSTOR Daily

An 1899 issue of The Monthly Record reports the death of an acclaimed Shakespearian "convict scholar," who served over 20 years on a life sentence.

Part obituary and part tribute, the paper wrote that Davis was in frequent dialogue with “learned societies” and “Shakespearian critics,” and that his writings had even found their way into mainstream newspapers. He was known as the “convict scholar,” and he made a “host of friends” on the outside through his love of knowledge.

Informing the public on the connection between recidivism & educational access

Hi!  We’re Lynn and Stephanie, and we’re students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. We’re doing a project for one of our classes to help raise awareness about an issue that is important to us. We’ve selected Pell Grants and prison education as our topic, as both of us have experience teaching inmates, and we don’t want to see the support that’s been made available to them via the Pell Grant program go away.

We developed a website with resources, information, and some of our thoughts regarding the importance of the Pell Grant. We’ve also talked about our experiences with teaching in the prison system, as well as shared some of our lesson plans that we used in our classrooms.

We’re hoping that tumblr can do us a solid and pass the link around to help us do well on this project, as well as raise awareness about the Pell Grant and prison education programs. If you don’t mind, please give this post a boost to help us spread the link around.

Wrapping the week up with some great news: JSTOR’s Access in Prison initiative has now reached over 1 million incarcerated learners!

Since 2007, we’ve worked to expand access to academic resources for students taking college courses while incarcerated. Now, thanks to ongoing collaboration and support, JSTOR is available in nearly 1,400 prisons worldwide.
