the thing that breaks my heart the most about kazui is how realistic his experience is. he is a perfect example of the damage that homophobia can do, not just to queer people but to those they love as well and it strips away all the logic and the facts and the arguments to create the most heartbreaking and emphatic showcase of the human experience. kazui hates himself. he hates himself so much, he will never stop hating himself, and even more than that he resents the fact that all his suffering seems to be for nothing. it's so SO saddening.

and unfortunately it's a real world experience and i hope that people can look past the lens of innocent/guilty voting just to consider his story outside of it's context for a minute because things like this are still prevalent in the world and they are a reminder of the reason we need to fight for queer rights for everybody and be understanding of other's lives. he may be fictional but his reality is one that may be true for others ohhh i hate my life i hate everything yamanaka i'm sorry for calling you a fraud this is a love letter to your storycrafting ability

with the 3rd kazui trial coming up i thought i would Share My Theory with the other five people on here who like/care about him

SO what we know so far is that kazui is gay and he didn't cheat on his wife. what's unclear is what actually caused his wife's suicide and what truths came to light abt him and in what context.

here are the biggest things i noticed

Half

the lyrics in half dont fully make sense being directed at his wife. some yes, but most of the song, no. namely the chorus "The curse of reuniting with you puts a dagger in my heart/I imagined that you saying "See you" is the same as "It's over"/only if your heart would change but that’s not possible" why would reuniting with his wife be a curse and something painful? and also, in what context would she be telling him "it's over", and in what way would he want her heart to change? another spotty part is the second verse "I could try you, and also try to touch you but you probably won’t notice/I understand that this love is out of bounds, so nothing has to change/all these memories and you, only if I could erase them" again, this seems weird in the context of being spoken to his wife. it's further accentuated by this part later in this song. "I’m sure nothing will change and/we’ll laugh together and call each other stupid names/so many things I wish I hadn't known, I'm just a coward" this Could be interpreted as something he's directing to his wife, BUT!!! in the end of the song, there are lines spoken in the background of the lyrics. one of them says "'you're an idiot,' you said while we laughed".

which is why i think Half wasn't about his wife, it was mostly about the Nameless Bartender we see in half and cat

Cat

most of the information we have comes from cat. the most important part of the song imo is the dialogue in the middle when kazui says "hey, what would you do if i said i like-like you?". we already know this is directed at the guy, but i think this connects to the spoken part in Half. i think the guy thought Kazui was joking, and called him an idiot. consequently, i think the fall of his relationship and his wife's suicide happened as an indirect result of this.

so, who is the guy?

during the interrogations, kazui mentions a childhood friend twice.

additionally, these answers also seem to be hinting at him.

incidentally, i think the childhood friend is the bartender in the music videos and the guy standing furthest in the front at kazui's wedding in cat.

there is a lot of focus on hands in cat. namely, wedding rings. the mystery man/childhood friend is seen wearing a wedding ring as well, and there is focus on that during the wedding itself.

i think that the childhood friend got married, and kazui did the same as a sort of way to force himself to get over his feelings.

moreover!!! when kazui says the line "what would you do if i said i like-like you", he uses the word "suki" ("moshi ore ga omae no koto ga sukitte ittara, dou suru?"). "suki" is a very volatile word in japanese that can either mean 'like' or 'love', and it's definitely not a word you throw around casually to people you don't know or don't have a close relationship to. it's loaded. very loaded. to me, that further consolidates the fact that the guy kazui was talking to wasn't just some stranger he just met. no, it's someone he's known for a long time. childhood friend?

So, what happened?

we know that kazui was drunk when he vaguely confessed to the guy about liking him. being shot down like that and finally understanding that nothing is ever going to happen between them, that it was so far from the guy's mind that he thought it was a joke, i think that kazui reached a breaking point.

i think he was in a bad state of mind, either bc of the hangover or rejection, possibly a combination of both, and hit a sort of 'fuck it' state and told his wife. in cat, he presents himself as cold and ruthless in the scene leading up to his wife's death. despite there being apples present in both half and cat, he was never depicted biting them. however!!! he bit the dove -- which i think represents the apple in this case. he also did it right in front of her, which makes me think he told her everything in a callous way. doves also represent love and purity, an illusion he created (reinforced by the magician motif in cat) that was shattered in her eyes.

TL;DR

i think kazui has been in love with his childhood best friend since he was a kid, and i think he's the one who was confessed to despite them both being married.

being forced to hide his identity and feelings his entire life, he cracked under the pressure. liquid confidence gave kazui the push to cave and confess his feelings -- which were in turn laughed at and unreciprocated. the heartbreak drove him to tell his wife everything, which inevitably led to her death.

take all of this with a grain of salt!! these are just my own speculations based off mere breadcrumbs. at least i felt like my japanese degree finally had some worth while i was doing this analysis LMAOOOO. anyway.

also while i'm at it i find it really interesting how there's such a musical switch up between the theatre and jazz themes from his initial two songs to the more unchained sounding version he presents in camouflage!!!!!!!!! it's definitely intended to bring out ideas of wilderness if the instrumentation is anything to go by and that's not my place to question (cough rockwell) but i think it's soooo good because it's proof his mask is no longer on. he doesn't have to be classy and restrained anymore, he doesn't have to live up to societal ideals because he's ripping off that mask and admitting who he is without the lies. i like the singular blaring alarm sound in the instrumental also. like why did they do that.
