It is no secret that most company employees hate that little thing called code of conduct training. For many of them, not only does it feel like a huge waste of time, but it may also interfere with their work. There is a power in numbers and groups. Sometimes employees don’t want to go because it is embarrassing to go by themselves or in tiny groups – like they are being singled out. If you are having some sort of sales competition at work, they may also feel it is unfair for others to not have to go at that time. By making it mandatory for everyone at the same time, you are leveling the playing field for all your employees. They are in it together and will endure it together.
Turn It Into A Fun Experience
Let’s face it: most of those training courses are really, really boring. So boring that your employees aren’t paying attention anyway. Spice things up so it’s part social mixer, part learning experience. Throw in some simple games that require employees to get up and move around, so they stay awake and alert. Giving them something fun to do will also make them more likely to go later, as they will remember the positive experience from before.
Don’t Insult Their Intelligence
Even after all of this, you may realize that your employees are still resisting the training. This is probably because they feel that they are being condescended to by the higher-ups. No one wants to be talked down to, let alone by authorities – let alone as adults. They are adults, so you should treat them like ones. While it is important to cover all bases in your training, you should be able to find a way to do it without making them feel inferior or like they need to repeat the fifth grade.
