Presidential Libraries Act Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act (PRMPA) of 1974 Presidential Historical Materials are covered by PRMPA.
#OTD 12/19/1974 The Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act (PRMPA) of 1974 was signed and enacted into law by President Gerald Ford. Only the Nixon Presidential Historical Materials are governed by PRMPA. The Act put the Nixon Presidential historical materials under the custody of the Archivist of the United States in order to permanently preserve the materials.
PRMPA stipulates that those materials relevant to the understanding of Abuse of Governmental Power and Watergate are to be processed and released to the public prior to the release of all other materials.
Materials related to the Abuse of Governmental Power and the constitutional and statutory duties of the President and his White House staff are retained by the National Archives. PRMPA mandates that the National Archives preserve and process these materials, and prepare them for public access. (Image: President Ford at his desk on 4/16/1976; NAID 12082712)
