Kya II being Zuko and Katara’s child out of some secret affair is one of the most baffling HCs I’ve ever read in my life. I’ve been crying laughing for the last half hour. Genuine round of applause to whoever cooked up that nonsense.

I saw somebody say they couldn't get into 99% of Kataang fics because "they're all about building the ship up as a fortress against haters," and to them I guess it looks like "making the ship as western liberal heteronormative as possible which is extremely alienating culturally." They then ended by saying that they need to be more proactive, not reactive in their fan content. Rich coming from somebody who ofc likes ZK, azul/aang for some reason, and also unironically likes fanfics shipping Pocahontas and John Smith. I'd rather have whatever they're complaining about with Kataang fics than the regressive BS of shipping a victim of genocide with their colonizer. Because apparently heaven forbid a guy actually respects a girl and treats her as an equal.
Not really sure what they mean by that, when most of the kataang fics I’ve seen and read are just portraying their canon dynamic. Also, idk what they’re talking about when they claim kataang shippers are “making the ship western” when most of the kataang stuff I see clearly devotes a lot of time to incorporating actual cultural inspiration the characters are based on into the fan works, be it in fanart or fanfic. Even I did this when I wrote my kataang fic. I spent hours researching cultural practices to make sure it was realistic.
Eh, maybe I just have selective taste about the fan content I consume so I just am not seeing whatever they are. I am fairly picky about what fanfictions I read because I am a writer myself, so.
Also, if they’re a zutara shipper, I’m wondering why they’re even interacting with kataang fanfiction. For kataang shippers, I could understand why they might be seeing zutara fanfictions, because ZK shippers pretty notoriously tag kataang in their pairings on their fics even when the fic is anti kataang, but kataang centric fics written by kataang shippers pretty much never tag Zuko/Katara, so… not sure what’s happening there tbh
The love between Katara and Aang
Something I love about Kataang is the slow burn of it, like they are allowed to be friends first, lovers second, and that is just really cute, like I feel like a lot of shows, in the Cave of Two Lovers episode, when they first officially kiss, I feel like a lot of others stories would have now made them a couple directly after, but that isn't really how it works, a kiss doesn't fully mean, now we are dating. And the way they both process their feelings is so nice to see, as they have two different ways to view it.
Aang felt the need to make his feelings known. He wanted Katara to know he loved her and wanted to know if she felt the same. With the war and the fact that he might die, he wanted to get that out. That way, if he died, he wouldn't die with any regret on the subject. Katara, I feel, how she viewed it as: there is a war. We won't have time to dwell on this, as starting a relationship in the middle of everything could be viewed as a distraction from the mission, and just add a extra thing to worry about on top of all of it, because what if she had agreed to date Aang during the Ember Island and than he died in the final, it would just make it more painful, or maybe even, it would surve as a distration with would make her mess up. Like, had the invasion during the black sun worked out, I could see them getting together, but because it failed, and so much shit happened between then and Ember Island, they didn't really have time to talk about it.
I might have gotten one or both characters wrong on this, but I just honestly love how they came at the whole relationship and love from different viewpoints, and both are correct and wrong in their own way. You can see why Aang would want to get it all out before he might die, but also why Katara would want them to only focus on ending the war for now; the other can come after, which it did. I also love the fact that the last scene of the show takes place a couple of weeks or months after Zuko's coronation. I got both when trying to look it up. But that. I really love that they waited for that for them to be a couple, because it both shows Aang, after his messed-up kiss, learned from it and clearly never pushed Katara into something she was unsure about until she felt ready, and it is realistic to want to wait for thing to get a bit more stable before she commit to a relationship, something that to some people are a really big deal.
yknow people don't even have to like aang/katara but for someone to genuinely believe that their romance came from nowhere is so baffling to me. even as a child when i saw katara kiss and hug aang i knew they were gonna mention it somewhere in the finale. it's in your face chemistry even if you don't like the ship. idk if people are genuinely dumb enough to not understand romantic build up from a nicklodeon show or do they just deny it because it doesn't fit their preferred ship?
Right, like it’s totally fine to have ship preferences or for kataang to just like not float your boat lol. But they just straight up lie about it?? 😭
Like???? Kataang was set up in episode 1 of the show… it was very obvious… they had a whole slow motion crush filter trope moment, Aang basically immediately started treating Katara like she was the most special person ever, he offered to take her to the north to learn waterbending purely for HER benefit, he straight up said all his suffering was worth it because at least he got to meet her, he literally (LITERALLY) swept Katara off her feet in episode 2, he even sacrificed himself for her and her entire village??? Who wouldn’t be crushing hard? Lol, Katara did not stand a chance 😂
Anti kataang people act like Katara and Aang never had chemistry which is just insane to me. What show did they watch? Omg, Katara and Aang were immediately enamored with each other and Katara was about to risk it all and leave her entire tribe to travel with Aang alone. She was watching him get dressed and everything and talking about how she thought he was special and she’d known him like 2 days!! TWO!
They were ride or die from the jump. And it just got more intense the longer the show went on? Katara literally had a “TOUCH HIM AND DIE” moment, threatening to kill Zuko for Aang? Aang went feral with rage toward that general bc he thought Katara died in front of him? They’re insane and the possessive rage trope is going both ways here lol. Katara was considering the possibility of MARRYING that boy a little over halfway through the first season.
No chemistry WHERE?! My brother in Christ they have nothing BUT chemistry! Just because it isn’t toxic and they aren’t fighting every second doesn’t mean they don’t have chemistry. They have so many romantic tropes, the difference is that Katara usually takes on the role typical for the male character and Aang takes the role typical of the female character. They basically just subvert and gender bend a lot of heterosexual romance tropes, which I’m a big fan of lol. I LOVE that about them 🤭
Imo that ^ is the exact reason people try to deny their romantic chemistry in the show. And someone on here said kataang had to beat the no chemistry allegations in the movie LMAOOO
The creative team behind the movie said “here you go, damn!” and threw the balcony scene at us
RAAAAAAAAAAH it’s like the purest crack cocaine omfg I’ll never move on from this. Whoever had this idea I owe you my life and may your pillow always be cold on both sides
Also even actual straight men shipping Kataang isn’t this moral crime. For starters a lot of the men shipping Aang and Katara now were most likely young boys that watch the original show growing up. (Plus Kataang antis will ignore the men that ship ZK whenever it’s convenient.)
I agree that there’s nothing wrong with straight men shipping kataang either, because shipping stuff isn’t some kind of moral act. But we both know ZK shippers will just ignore cishet male KA shippers by writing them off as incels, which is what they’ve tried to do with me as well based purely on that they know I’m a man. But they don’t seem to know I’m gay, and that their stupid insult doesn’t make sense 🤣
And yes they love to ignore male ZK shippers lmao
I should start work on my kataang vs koh fic again lol
Ugh, I saw this post from this person saying they get sad seeing ZK and Kataang shippers beefing with each other and they like both of those ships and everybody just needs to stay in their lane and be nice or log off and go to their jobs because it's not that big of a deal. 🙄 It especially ticks me off because they said nobody gives a fuck about Katara in these shipping wars.
Uh, most of us Kataang shippers do give a fuck about Katara??? I hate when people make ignorant statements like the ones in that post because they don't realize why Kataang shippers are so defensive against ZK shippers. Kataang shippers have had to deal with hate and harassment from bitter ZK's FOR ALMOST TWENTY YEARS. It's rich of them telling everybody to stay in their lane, when it's mainly ZK shippers I see complaining in the comments and reblogs of posts tagged anti ZK. It's also telling that they ship Zu/kka and mention liking Sokka's other canon ships, but don't mention Zuko's canon ship with Mai.
It’s so annoying how these random people keep coming into the kataang tag to be like “hey guys let’s all just be FRIENDS” when they clearly don’t comprehend the shit the ZK fandom says about kataang shippers, about the characters, and about the creators of the show lmfao.
They are literally calling Mike and Bryan pedophiles. They are accusing these men of felony crimes when neither of them have EVER had any sort of work place complaint or allegation against them in their entire careers.
No, it isn’t a “mutual” problem between kataang shippers and zutara shippers. We have every right to defend ourselves against them. We have every right to defend the show we love against them. And yes, we DO have the right to defend the creators as well against people falsely accusing them of the most serious crimes someone could commit that could send them to fucking PRISON!
If someone genuinely thinks kataang shippers defending the show/ship/creators against people that are literally creating false allegations with zero evidence purely because they’re MAD that their FANON INVENTION ISNT CANON is in any way the same thing, they’re a fucking idiot.
This “ship war” isn’t even about ships at this point. This is about defending the integrity of the show and the creators. These are real human beings, and what these people are doing could ruin their lives forever. They don’t deserve this no matter what your ship preferences are. I don’t give a FUCK that their crack ship didn’t happen, or if they like kataang or don’t like it. Shove it up yalls ass for all I give a damn. This all stopped being about shipping a long time ago.
I find it annoying when people(usually people who like ZK mainly if I'm being honest) say that the romance is the weakest part writing wise of ATLA. While I can get that criticism when it comes to Sukka and Maiko to an extent, I don't get how that criticism applies to Kataang. It was clearly set up from the very beginning. But no, in spite of all Kataang's moments, ZK's insist their ship was totally going to be endgame if the show had just gotten a fourth season. It's all evil Bryke's fault for not letting the writers do what they wanted to do.
I completely disagree with that argument. Sure, Sukka and Maiko are kind of lacking due to the show not focusing as much on those relationships, but kataang was always the actual romantic subplot of ATLA so.. and it was well developed and written. It was actually surprisingly well developed and written for a kids cartoon when that is usually not the case for romantic plots lol. It’s so well handled that it stands out amongst other pairings in similar media.
Katara and Aang’s relationship was allowed to breathe and grow naturally throughout the 3 seasons of the show. We saw them becoming genuine friends. We saw how well they worked together. We saw what Aang offered to Katara and what Katara offered to Aang. We saw how important their bond was to the narrative. We saw really great and happy moments between them AND bad moments. We got the full spectrum of their relationship, not just sappy romance for the sake of sappy romance. We saw Katara and Aang see the best and worst in each other and choose one another despite that over and over, so at the end, when they finally got together it actually felt earned and felt like these two characters finally “beat the odds” and got their happy ending.
They parallel one another constantly, far more than some people seem to realize. They’re both the “last” of their tribe/nation, they both lost a parent to genocide, they’re both victims of genocide, and we see how they return to one another things they thought they’d lost forever. They’re actually a very sweet and heartfelt love story, and they subvert a lot of hetero tropes that are prevalent in media and were especially prevalent when ATLA was written. Katara and Aang basically “gender bend” so many tropes where Aang takes the position that is typical for the female character and Katara takes the position typical for the male character. That’s an aspect I like about their dynamic. That and, their relationship by the end of ATLA feels mature and fleshed out and full of depth, which is appealing to kids and adults alike.
