It's no problem! If you're just starting to write, I wouldn't suggest making a daily or even weekly goal yet, because you may not enjoy writing. If you know you enjoy it, I would consider that the National Novel Writing Month (November) website essentially considers 1,667 words a day to be difficult. You'll need to keep in mind how much time per day you'll be able to dedicate to writing, considering your schedule for other activities and how strict you may want to stick to your goal. Personally, I'm participating in the "easier" version of National Novel Writing Month (Camp NaNoWriMo) next month, and I've set a goal of 20,000 words for the month, which amounts to roughly 645-650 words a day. If I meet that goal is another story. I'm a pretty slow writer. I think an even 500 might be a steady goal for a beginner if you really want to hone your skills. Consider also dedicating your time to reading, which is another way to improve your writing without getting words down on paper (or screen).
