Warning: Pro-Kylo Ren Post
So apparently being Anti-Reylo and Pro-Kylo Ren is a controversial opinion. I must’ve been away for a long time.
Sooooooo....anybody ever heard of Darth Vader...Anakin Skywalker?
I didn’t think so because y’all’d’ve been second guessing your lack of support for Kylo Ren’s redemption if you had.
Alright, alright, alright. Anakin Skywalker was raised as a slave boy on a sand planet with people who didn’t really care about him, save his mother and maybe a few friends.
Anakin Skywalker was ‘won’ in a bet and was released from slavery to be trained as a Jedi under Qui-Gon Jinn and then Obi-Wan Kenobi. He grew up as a Jedi, moderately underappreciated and pretty untrusted by the Jedi Council. He was groomed from his mid-teen years by Palpatine/Darth Sidious to embrace his anger and direct it at the people who made him angry. He saw his mother killed and went on a rampage. He fell in love with Padme Amidala and got married to her in secret, getting her pregnant.
Anakin tried his best to...y’know...be what the Jedi wanted him to be. He was under very strict rules...no emotional attachments (that flew the fuck out the window) and tried his hardest to be unquestioningly obedient, failing most of the time because of how impatient he is.
As his grooming continued, Sidious/Palpatine continued to play on young Skywalker’s fears...the death of his loved ones, the Jedis not trusting him, Obi Wan not caring, and himself never reaching his full potential until he finally snapped. He pushed people away, became increasingly withdrawn, became unstable....and murdered children. He, then, went on to basically rule an fascist Empire.
This...all...sounds pretty familiar to me.
Kylo Ren/Ben Solo was raised in a household with presumably two parents who didn’t get along at least 50% of the time. From what I understand, he grew up fairly lonely. He grew up being whispered to and groomed from a very young age to embrace his emotions and direct his anger accordingly by Supreme Leader Snoke.
His Uncle, Luke Skywalker, tried to help when he was sent away to train as Jedi, but he was sent away. His mother tried to help. His father tried to help. But no one was around who understood what was truly happening to him. Snoke was brainwashing this kid with false promises and lies from the time he was young.
In my opinion, there was no saving him. Not then.
I do blame Kylo Ren for pushing people away, willingly and unwillingly.
I blame him for not listening to Luke or his parents.
I blame him for the destruction of the Republic and the murder of millions.
I expect him to take responsibility for his actions when he is redeemed.
WHICH HE LIKELY WILL BE.
I am fully 100% in favor of a redemption because I see him as too close to the light for it to go any other way.
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader is not Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. I know that. They are two very separate characters. They have their similarities, but are not the same.
The means by which Anakin fell to the dark side is much different than Ben’s, mainly because we don’t know exactly under what duress and circumstance he did. This is something I wish to know.
I do believe that Ben has always had more autonomy in the situation he partially caused than Anakin Skywalker did in his respective mess. But Anakin as Vader was totally complicit and in fact, ordered, the murder of millions as well.
Anakin Skywalker is a protagonist/anti-hero.
Darth Vader is a full blown villain, the antagonist.
I separate their identities, as everyone, I believe, should.
Anakin Skywalker began as a protagonist, who became the antagonist known as Darth Vader. When Vader betrayed the Emperor, he becomes Anakin Skywalker, the anti-hero.
Ben Solo began as a protagonist, who became the antagonist known as Kylo Ren. When/if he betrays Supreme Leader Snoke, he becomes Ben Solo, the anti-hero.
Both of the respective identities I stated belong to the respective original protagonist.
However, when Darth Vader betrayed the Emperor, it was not Darth Vader who was redeemed, it was Anakin Skywalker.
When/if Kylo Ren betrays the First Order/Supreme Leader, it will be Ben Solo who is redeemed, not Kylo Ren.
As much as their identities and their aliases are their own and are who they are, I believe their true identity is lost in the person they were...essentially...forced to become for one reason or another.
Both Ben Solo and Anakin Skywalker made the decision to become either Kylo Ren or Darth Vader. It was...a choice on both their ends. Whether or not they were brainwashed and groomed, it was still a choice...one which they freely chose to do.
And they do/did many of the same acts. Darth Vader was more reserved and proper as a villain, but he ordered the death of millions on Alderaan and other planets. Kylo Ren is unstable as an antagonist and he ordered the death of millions just the same.
To find Anakin Skywalker redeemable and Ben Solo not is hypocritical on your part. No one I’ve ever seen argues the validity of Anakin’s redemption.
But yet we argue the validity of Ben’s.
I’m not saying that his fascist dictatorship as Kylo Ren and senseless genocide is okay, just like I would never say Vader’s was.
But if one is redeemable, so is the other.
Now that’s my opinion. Whether you agree with me or not is neither here nor there.
