so there are a million and one problems with the fact that pocahantas is a movie in the first place. but one issue i haven’t seen brought up as much is the way a queercoded villain comes into the picture. because this character, governor ratcliffe, he’s definitely one of those villains. but the fact that he, the main antagonist, is very much written to come off as overtly flamboyant and somewhat gender nonconforming, and is then put opposite to the indigenous people portrayed in the movie... that doesn’t sit right with me. like i’m lakota i’m certainly not as aware of the history of gender expression with the algonquian people but when you look at the history of colonialism and the cultural genocide that destroyed the role of two-spirit people (using that as an umbrella term for the gnc and queer indigenous people of north america of that time, yes i am aware 2s was coined in the 90s) it just feels really insidious that the main face of european colonialism in that movie was queer himself

#just feels like the age-old tradition of pitting different oppressed demographics against each other to keep them from focusing on the real #problem*#that's the big thing i've been noticing and learning especially maybe these past 5 years?#these oppressive structures thrive on staying on top by trying to provoke infighting/fighting between different demographics #it's the most effective way they can keep any sort of solidarity from happening #and it's like.. SCARY how easily they've been able to continue doing this for quite frankly centuries #like i was reading something for my criminal justice class that was talking about the history of race as a construct in america #and from that it was talking about how one of the reasons slavery became such a big thing #was because there was a rising sort of class solidarity between black and white indentured servants or something like that #and like ok mind you it wasn't exactly directed towards the upper class and they didnt 100% have the right idea #but like.. these rich white people saw the power they had working on the same level and like #so like. a huge reason they started kidnapping people was because it'd create this hierarchy to keep people from working together #and it just reflects this huge huge huge problem that's STILL happening like EVERYWHERE #like it's a pattern that still exists today. maybe not the way it used to (even though slavery certainly still exists and SHOULD NOT)#but like look what the fuck's going on today because of these artificial hierarchies that were created CENTURIES AGO-#also since it's on my mind post-civil war they had these residential school type things that had both indigenous people and former slaves #it was for young adults not so much kids but my great great grandmother had gone to this one #i think this was actually a later stage of carlisle or something like that #but like the idea was it was supposed to pit black and indigenous people against each other instead of seeing the actual oppressor #i mean that didn't really work though i mean look at aim and the black panthers #that solidarity sure as hell existed and still does but it's rarely talked about in wide media bc the fbi was able to like #successfully convince the american public that these people were terrorists #and i will remind everybody that leonard peltier is still in prison for even just being part of aim when he did NOTHING wrong #i'm sorry this is a really long just like thing of tags but like this really fucking gets me heated just. it's fucking awful oh my god.
