Hiii!! I love your blog and all of your wonderful comments on the shows you're watching. I started watching kdramas about a year ago and my watchlist just keeps growing. I have a specific question for you, because I think you may be able to give me some advice.
I've been following you for awhile and I know you won't watch a show if there are red flags/triggers that are too much. But what do you do if there's a show you want to watch but the actor is a red flag in real life? I'm dying to watch Mr. Sunshine but that lead actor irl is pretty gross; everyone talks about It's Okay To Not Be Okay, but I find the way the lead actress treated her irl bf unacceptable. I want to watch these shows because they're supposed to be amazing, but I don't want to support these actors by watching their stuff. Do you have similar issues? How do you compartmentalize this kind of stuff?
Awww thanks so much for the blog love and welcome to K-dramas!!
This is a hard question and something I often struggle with. There are just certain actors that have a lot of clout and will continue to get cast in great dramas when they are just garbage humans in real life. It really sucks.
It's funny that you ask specifically about Mr. Sunshine because that was a drama I skipped. I absolutely HATE Lee Byung Hyun and it's just a no go for me. However a ton of my mutuals watched it and loved it so I know I'm missing out.
On the other hand, I watched Our Liberation Notes even though Lee Min Ki is a problem. For some reason my brain was able to mostly bypass that issue but other people couldn't do the same.
I cannot compartmentalize anything very well (not in dramas and not in irl) so I might not be the best person to ask about how how to get around it. :P I'd just say, if your brain can't get around a dude's ickiness, go with your gut. You won't enjoy the drama if you're always being reminded of it. But if you can, no one is judging you. And also, screw everyone for continuing to cast these jerks!
