*Oh wait. Spy x Family has Yuri constantly obsessed and jealous over his sister. But he appears so infrequently and his sister-obsession is framed as weird and stupid.
**Apothecary Diaries has the rare nudity, but is shockingly non-objectifying, for a series about literal harem concubines and prostitutes. Even the one "boob shot" wasn't ecchi AT ALL, and was pertinent to the context of the conversation, because the protagonist was advising the concubine to utilize her boobs since she wanted to become pregnant again.
***Someone may say Claymore's nudity makes it guilty of a fanservice trope, but, as someone who has drawn a lot of nude models in person, Claymore feels like an example of non-sexualized nudity. Their bodies are literally turning into monstrous forms, because of the experiments done on them. It makes sense for them to "Hulk-out" and their clothes to sometimes tear off. But it's never gratuitous. Then again i am an oblivious aroace.
Ok wait that's different because...@funkyfrogbait on all platforms!!!
I would love a resource that warns about these tropes. After Bunny Drop, it's so hard to let my guard down and enjoy a series, even if it's been fine for 2 seasons so far.
Like, is Isekai Shokudou hinting a romance between Kuro and the Chef??? Please dont. She looks 14. He's clearly 30+. I dont care if she's a centuries' old dragon within the story's context. She's disguised as a young human girl, and if she romances a 30-something, then I'm going to have to watch the visual of a 14 year old dating a 30+. Please, no. I've loved the series so far. 😭
I'm so afraid to watch Sweetness And Lightning, because it seems like soothing iyashikei, but i never know when a young girl hanging out with an older man is going to turn into a romance. And I'm just not into that trope. As in, it gives me the creeps.
Only one-way crushes that go nowhere, like in Tiger And Bunny or Samurai 7, are tolerable to me. Young girls get crushes on older men in reality. I'm fine acknowledging that. But let the guy stay oblivious about it, only see her as a kid, and the series not frame her crush as the "couple to root for".
I remember when if you wanted to avoid Harem tropes, all you had to do was not watch the Harem Genre. But now Harem is overlaid onto almost every series. I feel so sorry for everyone who can't stand Harem Anime anymore. ---I'm not completely averse to Harems yet, because i grew up on them. But i am sick of the majority of female characters in a cast being romance options with crushes on the male protagonist.
That's why Bakarina and Reverse Harems are so refreshing. Tho, i suppose the fact that such small/obvious subversions still feel subversive, points to how male protag cishet Harem subplots have infected almost everything. And that gets bland. 😞
