Week 8 

I printed my Process Book on G.F.Smith Naturalis paper double sided for perfect binding. Unfortunately after binding I saw there was an error in the printing where one of the page numbers missed a digit. I corrected it with pencil but unfortunately it is on my final print. I used the perfect binding method I learnt in a workshop earlier in the unit to bind my book. I then printed my front cover again with a larger spine width of 12cm as I realised my book was thicker than I had calculated. 

Overall I was happy with the outcome of my binding. There is a small paint mark on the front cover from the bindery from the press or the trimmer. Unfortunately this was out of my control.

Week 8 

I designed my cover for my process book using an approximated spine width of 11cm based on my amount of pages. 

On my front cover I have called my process book ‘Portfolio’ with the text ‘LVL_4″ to represent my level of study being level 4. I have also included the text ‘VC_IC1′ so initialise ‘Visual Communication in Context 1′ the unit title. I have also included my name for reference. I added the unit name and my level on the spine as an additional design feature. 

I wanted the back cover to be simple to not distract from the book and to keep with the minimalist design. I decided that using a splat texture from the front cover, and project first pages linked well with the theme, and also visually looked good.

Week 8 

I developed my process book for my 3rd brief ‘There’s an App for That’, implementing consistent design features from my ‘Food Types’ and ‘Judge a Book by it’s Cover’ process book pages. 

I also included my evaluation and bibliography as my ending pages.

Week 8

I made adjustments to my process book based on my process book tutorial. At this stage I have only designed my process book for the ‘Food Types’ brief, so I have made adjustments to my Process Book so far. 

I designed a first page using a splattered texture, that I have used in my front cover and title page, and I will use on my other title pages. I felt this would link well and also show an artistic first impression on my process book that carries on through key pages. 

I designed each of my pages with a colour accent on the top left and right of each double page spread. This is to add colour to my pages as well as adding order as a way of colour coding my projects. I also added section names to the left margin of each left page in a double page spread to further add organisation. 

I changed the layout of my photos so that they do not spread across the centre of a double page, as with perfect binding information would have been lost. I also added citing with figures to these photos. 

I feel these design changes, particularly the implementation of colour has made this development of my process book so far more professional and user friendly, as well as more fun with accents of colour. I will next continue to make my page designs for brief 2 and 3.

Week 5 

I next tested my process book pages on a G.F.Smith paper I ordered for my pages. I printed on G.F.Smith Naturalis Smooth Absolute White 160gsm. I selected this paper as I liked the pure white tone of the paper. I didn’t want a cool white as this can sometimes be tiring on the eyes when reading lots of paragraphs and smaller type sizes. I was happy with the finish of the paper as it is smooth but not gloss and gives the inked areas a light shine that feels professional. However, I realised this card thickness feels too thick for my book as it isn’t very comfortable to turn the pages as it bounces back. I think it would also make my book very chunky and thick. I think I will look at the 135gsm version of this paper instead to make the book lighter weight and better fitting to book pages. I might use a thicker version of this card for my front cover, back cover and spine, but I will consider my paper choices more when I have designed these elements fully.

Week 5 

I test printed a few pages of my process book to exact size, to test the readability of my pages. I used the guillotine in the maker room to trim down my pages at the crop marks. 

I looked at the type to see if the body copy size was readable. The body copy uses the typeface ‘Apparat’ in regular font at 9pt with 12pt leading. I think this is a very comfortable size on the eye, I feel it would still be comfortable at 8pt as well if I need to lower it for space. This printing test made me realise more of my type could be 9pt, as a lot of my annotations on my later pages follow the same character style as my stand first at 12pt. For space I feel I could lower a lot of my annotation to match my body copy, so I can include more content on a page. 

Another test I did with these pages is bring them together at the edges as if they were bound, to look to see if my inner margins are appropriate. I feel for my perfect binding method, my generous margins are appropriate, especially as this space will become more crucial the more pages I include. I do however feel, one the edges are brought together, the outer margin feels far too generous and this could be space I can make use of. In my 12 column grid I was placing my type in columns 2-9. I feel like this could be extended to column 10 or 11 to make better use of space.
