Laser Cutting Research: Simon Elvins
‘Simon Elvins’ is a graphic designer based in London who creates engraved art using the technique of laser cutting. The work shown above was created for a recent exhibition involving 10 design studios from London and 10 from Berlin. As a collective, they created designs by laser engraving wood. An extremely detailed raster engraving of a city plan was etched onto plywood.
Laser Cutting Research: Eric Standley
’Eric Standley’ is a practical laser cutting artist who uses plywood to create highly detailed 3D work. The photos above show his work and how much time & effort is put into it. He uses separate cut sheets of wood and overlays them. The outcome being these beautiful pieces of work which show high detail and intricate thoughtful work.
Semester 2 - Professional Context 1 - Workshop - Laser Cutting
Within semester 2, I have taken part in 9 weeks worth of workshops. The 9 weeks where split up into a different session every 3 weeks. For 3 of the weeks, I took part in the Laser Cutting workshop. Within this workshop we learnt how to use the laser cutting machine, the overall process and how to create an appropriate design.
The images shown above are from the final session of the laser cutting workshop. In this session, we finalized a design that we wanted to create in the laser cutter and created our final product.
The circular design shown in the images above was created by myself from scratched and I decided to use this design and I thought it would look good repeated when made into a pattern or an outcome. I decided to use acrylic for my outcome and engrave my design onto it.
Overall, I think the final outcome works very well. I have executed it well using my skills learnt within the workshop session. I have learnt how to correctly and safely use the laser cutting machine during this workshop and I will use the skills learnt within my upcoming work.

The images shown above are from the first 2 sessions of the workshop. In these two sessions, we learnt the basics about the laser cutting machine. This included the health and safety procedures, the different uses of the machine and what materials you can use.
In the second lesson, we experimented on illustrator with creating different patterns and using different tools. This included using the pattern tool which meant creating our own design and implementing it into a brush stroke. This allows us to create a larger design easily that we have made.
