The front door slams so hard he can hear the pictures on the wall rattle. Dream watches as Hob sighs and runs his fingers through his hair before he starts cleaning up the dirty dishes, putting all the remaining scraps onto one plate, stacking them. For all of that.” “No apologies needed,” Dream starts collecting the glassware because if he doesn't occupy his hands he is going to try to physically comfort Hob and that is the last thing either of them needs right now. “I am, unfortunately, well acquainted with such… ah, discussions… between partners. I would offer you advice, but as you can see by my lack of cohabitant, I never have figured out how to manage conflicts like that. It is better that I remain… unattached.”

When he can hear Hob get close to the couch Dream dares look at him again. “I took the liberty,” he gestures to the other tumbler of whisky sitting on the coffee table.  Hob picks it up and sits closer to Dream than strictly necessary; he could have sat at the far end of the couch, but instead chooses the middle, with barely a foot between them. Worse, he sits facing Dream, one leg under him. Dream is hyperaware of their proximity and slips his hand that is not holding his drink under his thigh to stop himself from reaching out. When Hob sips the liquor he smiles. “You remembered,” he says, as if Dream could possibly have ignored Hob talking about his favorite whisky at the first Endless Holiday Party he attended.

It has been a good number of years since his kitchen saw this much use.
