Acting Conservatory 101

I recently landed a residence at a fantastic conservatory for the performing arts. I’m here to tell you exactly what the fuck is up with that. I might do conservatory VS college later, but here’s the quick & dirty version thus far:

You will be exhausted. All the time. Every day. The workload and general expectations will wring you out and leave you to dry.

Because of this, you need to make a 100% honest attempt at self care. No more romanticizing treating your body like shit. If you don’t do your honest best to eat well and sleep enough and stay hydrated, you will crash and burn.

Everyone is your friend until proven otherwise. Assume the best of people. It isn’t high school and odds are, everyone who’s there with you worked damn hard to be there. Unless you have a legitimate reason to dislike someone, be amiable.

Get the biggest, toughest water bottle ever. You’ll need it.

Don’t let it go to your head. Getting into a conservatory is 2% of the battle. The other 98% is the work you do while you’re there.

Be friends with your teachers and RAs (or whatever equivalent to RAs you may have.) Having them on your side from the beginning is loads better than trying to be “cool” and will help you in the long run.

Professionalism is important. You’re an actor now. Not a theatre kid. Not a musical nerd. Not a Broadway fan. An actor. Thinking of yourself that way will help you be professional when necessary.

Be proud of yourself. Not arrogant, necessarily, but do be proud. You’re doing a very brave thing. Don’t downplay your achievements.

Rate of Pay (2019)

I’ve decided to increase my rates since they haven’t changed since March 2018.

My base commission fee is now $17.50. For every 15 seconds of dialogue/noises I provide, you will pay an additional $2.50, guaranteeing I make at least $20 from each job I do.

This system is to make up for some of the very small parts I have played in the past where I have been asked to provide 10 seconds of dialogue/noises and walked away with just $2.50 and later just $10.00. Getting paid $20.00 minimum instead is still affordable to my directors and makes the work much more worth my time and is a much better alternative than doubling my rates.

Below is the new pay rate.

Commission Fee: $17.50 0 Minutes 1-14 Seconds: $20.00 0 Minutes 15-29 Seconds: $22.50 0 Minutes 30-44 Seconds: $25.00 0 Minutes 45-59 Seconds: $27.50 1 Minutes 0-14 Seconds: $30.00

I usually average about 45-60 seconds per character for a speaking part or 15-30 seconds of grunting/heavy breathing per character for a non-speaking part in a five minute short.

Voice Altering Filters: A valued skill I have acquired is voice editing, both original voice filters and voice filters replicated from various TV shows, movies and video games. For example, if you gave me pre-recorded lines that you wanted to sound more genuine to the characters they’re playing (say your short stars someone like Tali or EDI from Mass Effect), you would hand me the completed lines for those characters and I would then edit them for you. The length of the clip would not be a factor. Additional charges may incur if I have to make a voice altering effect I have not done before, but I have done a lot by now.

Standard Fee: If a project leader wants me to modulate the lines of other actors the price is $5.00 per character with possible additional fees (see Original Voice Filter below).

Self-Promotional Pro Bono Work: Other voice actors requesting voice filters independently may receive my services for free as long as they promote me on their social media, exceptions not withstanding (see Original Voice Filter below).

Known Voice Filter: I have a long list of voice altering filters I can do. If I know how to make what you want, there is no extra charge.

Original Voice Filter: If I have to dedicate time and effort to making a new filter to get the sound you want, that will be an additional $15.00 charge for project leaders and voice actors.
