A light ‘tap tap tap‘ drew Johnathan’s attention and there pecking at his office window was his own Selene. Pushing away from his desk he walked over to let her in, gingerly plucking the letter from her beak. He watched the beautiful barn owl soar over to her perch in the far corner before settling back at his desk with a half smile. The letter didn’t list a sender but merely had his name scrawled across the front in elegant script. Turning the paper over he grimaced, the wax seal on the back held a very specific insignia one he knew all too well. Exhaling heavily he sat back in his chair, deliberating over if he should actually open the letter or not. One hand absent mindedly scratched at his forearm where a black mark was concealed by his sleeve. Johnathan reluctantly decided to pry open the envelope and pull the parchment out. Skimming over the words his frown deepened and his lips formed a snarl.
Tossing the contents rather roughly into the trashcan at his feet he then pulled his wand from his side pocket.
“Incendio.”
Flames filled the garbage can until the letter was merely ash. Grumbling he let the fire die out before setting his head in his hands. Fingers gripping and pulling at his hair our of pure utter frustration. It had not been a good day.

Professor Johnathan Smith
Professor of Ancient Runes
Ravenclaw Head of House.
The sign outside his office had a small plaque on the wall that read in three small columns straight down. The door was usually always open, he kept an open door policy with his students and his house. If ever they needed him, his door was open. Though when it came to other Professors he didn’t like to be disturbed. Students he could handle but adults..he was at a loss. Johnathan had been busy all morning trying to get these new texts about Ancient Runes for his class. He had a very specific lesson plan for them in a few weeks. “Listen, money is no object. Really I can pay you whatever you need to get these sent to me immediately.” Heaving a sigh at the chatter on the other line, he glanced up. One hand moved to cover the receiver so he could speak aloud.
“Come in! Come in! This will only take a moment..” He nodded towards the figure lingering in the doorway before turning away to hopefully finish his conversation. “Yes, that’s brilliant! I’ll send the funds to you and meet with your contact to get the items.” Without so much as a thank you or a goodbye, he merely jotted down the location and hung up. Turning back he took a breath and focused upon who had entered his office.
“What can I do for you?”

The great hall was full of the usual hustle and bustle as the start of another year came to fruition. As the Head of Ravenclaw House, Johnathan was at the table early to observe the students returning and welcome the new additions to his House. Slowly he brought his mug of coffee to his lips, taking a sip of the smooth blend contently. As he glanced over the crowds of children he dark brown eyes sought out a familiar face. His daughter Ophelia would be arriving for her fifth year at Hogwarts. He was glad to be able to see her again, it was a relief that she was indeed alive and well. Sighing he turned his head, attention pulled by the Professor on his right. They spoke in hushed tones of their summers, Johnathan’s was spent staying on the castle grounds.
A beautifully colored barn owl soared in through along the high vaulted ceiling before landing in front of Johnathan. Grinning he brushed one hand along her soft feathery head. “Thank you Selene.” Plucking the letter from her beak he fed her a scrap from his breakfast before watching her take off. He recognized that wobbly penmanship anywhere, Cordelia had written him another letter about her summer.

Skimming over the paper in his hands Johnathan sighed, putting small checks or x’s next to answers that were correct or incorrect. Grading papers felt so tedious but then again he’d rather be grading papers than answering a call from them. One hand moved to scratch at the black mark hidden beneath his sleeve.
Setting the paper down he pulled the glasses from his face and rubbed the bridge of his nose. A headache had begun to pound at the back of his eyes causing him to cease in his reading. Grumbling to himself he leaned back in his chair trying to find the inspiration to continue with his work.
