Dear Students,
Here are three drawings from the “One! Thousand! Drawings!” show currently up in the Image Lab at the Discovery Building, UW-Madison. These are by Making Comics 1 classmate, Monkey King. Students were asked to go to the Discovery building with a stack of 20 index cards and to draw the people they saw in non-photo blue pencil, spending just three minutes on each drawing. They inked them in afterwards.

Dear Making Comics 2 students,
I told you we’d be working with dip pens this week. What I didn’t tell you was that the first pens I wanted you to use were at least 5 feet long and made from native sunflower stalks. It’s a good way begin with dip pens. It helps understand what leaning on the natural flexibility of the sticks does to the quality of line.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Character Drawing Jam
Time: About 20 minutes not including sharing images
Materials: black Flair Pen, copier paper templates, timing device
Each student needs a Drawing Jam template. This page should be divided into a 4x4 grid equalling 16 chambers and each chamber should have ‘caption area’ ruled in above it where people can write names or occupations or style of person.
Have the class begin by writing the word “Robber” in the caption area above the first chamber. Demonstrate this for them and hold the paper up. After they’ve written “Robber” ask them to pass the paper to the left. These two things are so important--- making sure they know exactly where to write the caption and making sure they know who to pass the paper to because things are about to go really fast once the exercise is begun.
Explain that the caption area is where we’re going to write words that conjure the idea of characters, ---how characters can be conjured from occupations like ‘robber’ or ‘grave digger’ or ‘food-vendor’, or a style of person, like ‘stoner’ or ‘snob’ or ‘socialite’, or by a suggestive names like ‘Mrs. Bumble Bottom”, “ Fruity Freaky Freddy” or even names that aren’t especially suggestive, like the name of a teacher you liked, or one you didn’t, or the name of a neighbor.
Start the exercise, instructing them to write an occupation in the caption area above the next frame and pass the paper. They have to do this in 10 seconds or less. Continue on
When the caption areas are full, it’s time to start drawing.
Students will have just one minute for each drawing and they should draw for the entire minute. After a minute, the paper is passed to the left and the next drawing is begun. Continue this until all the chambers are full. Tell students that if they are not sure how to draw what is in the caption, to just make something up.
When I keep time I say “you’re half way there” at 30 seconds, and then I count down from 5 seconds before I say pass. It’s a sustained exercise that demands tenacity and concentration, especially for the person who is ‘the timer’.
Once all the chambers are filled, share the results by having the class walk around to look at other people’s work, or use an overhead projector to project them.
Point out that none of the characters that have been drawn existed 30 minutes before the exercise started, and all of them came into being at the same time.
Collect the drawings and save them for next weeks assignment.
What happens when we have to draw so fast we don’t have time to think?
Why might it be better to just start drawing even if we’re not sure about what we are doing?

Soon we will begin our time together. Before we meet, I’d like you to do a few things…. One is to complete the first assignment , which you’ll need to do before our first class. The assignment is attached at the end of this letter.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING ON THE FIRST DAY
-Your completed first assignment, (instructions attached below)
-One three ring binder, 1.5 inch spine or larger
-100 plastic sheet protectors, loaded into the binder. Please get the clearest ones they have instead of anti-glare, and get either heavy weight or standard weight. Please don’t get economy weight. They’re not worth the trouble.
- A roll of scotch tape – the kind used to wrap gifts.
- Black Papermate Flair pens, medium point. You will only need one on the first day, but you should buy a dozen of them. They are inexpensive, they have beautiful black ink, but they tend run out quickly so you’ll need a box. Item number: PA8430152
-One box of 24 Crayola Crayons. No less and no more than 24. Crayola is a better brand than ‘Rose Art’ or the dollar store brands which have more wax than pigment.
-You will also need to order 12 Uniball Vision Stick Roller Ball Pens, Fine Point, Black ink Item #60126 Note: Get the one with the light gray body. Fine point not micro. And ‘Vision Stick’ not ‘Vision Elite’
All your other supplies will be included with your art kit and is covered by your lab fee for the class. The lab fee is $70.00 and payable with a check or Wisc Card at the Burser’s office.

YOUR CLASS NAME
In our class we all go by class names of our choosing rather than our given names. We’ll use only our class names for the entire semester. You are free to tell each other your given names of course, but in class we will call you by the name you’ve chosen.
You can pick the name of a character that exists in myth or fiction or even non-fiction, like Medusa or Shrek or Ruth Bader Ginsberg. You can choose to name yourself after an ‘entity’ of some sort, like NASA or MasterCard or Toll Plaza 5.
You can choose a character of any gender, from any point in time. Think of a name that you’d to hear said out loud a lot over the semester. For example, I love wookies, so one semester I was Professor Chewbacca and I was so happy whenever anyone said my name.
I’ve also been Professor Old Skull, Professor Sluggo, Professor Hebdo, Professor Squirrelhead, and Professor SETI. During our time together I’ll be Professor Yeti.
At the end of the semester your name will be retired. You’ll be able to use it again, but no other student will be able to use it in the future. On the attached sheet are all the names that are retired. If the name you want to use is already on this list, you’ll have to find a new one.
Please note: If you cannot decide on a class name by January 20th, you’ll be given the name of an American president and will go by that name for the whole semester. I’m assigning them in order and George Washington and John Adams have been used, next up are Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe.
