Well, I believe boring can be understood, especially with cases of those who aren't patient enough for classical orchestras. It's personally one of my least favorite albums he's released; if you'd like complete honesty, I've only listened to it twice. I mean, he doesn't sing in it, y'know? Bit of an unintentional let down for those who aren't utterly fascinated by his sense of musical variety/lyricism. Wouldn't say it's pretentious, though; not in the slightest. I think it's quite inspiring, that he took the time to learn about music theory and actually put his knowledge to good use, regardless of whatever "image" people seemed to fit him into, be it new wave or high brow.
