some thoughts on frontier 2.04

So profoundlysweetcrusade very nicely asks me my thoughts on this show, so here we are. And ofc, we’re talking about Harp and Grace.

I think my overriding thoughts are that Grace never does what I expect her to. Any other show, when Harp asks if she married Chesterfield for him, our ‘strong female lead’ might say it was for business reasons also, which in a way it was. But not Grace. She admits he was her first thought, that it was her choice and her decision to protect someone she loved.

I love this because she’s strong but she’s allowed to have her emotions. She’s not ashamed of them. She’s always honest about how she feels about the other characters (apart from when she’s scheming of course.) She doesn’t hide her disdain for Chesterfield even when it might help her, and she doesn’t hide her love for Harp despite the fact he constantly tells her they won’t work. And the narrative places her in the right. She saved him. She’s never made out to be a lovesick fool. She’s allowed to make her own choices and have her own reasons without being ridiculed for it. She’s strong enough to admit her own feelings even when she’s worried they aren’t reciprocated because they are hers and she doesn’t apologise for them.

I think it’s also interesting that she’s sort of the ‘man’ in this situation. What I mean is, in every other show we have men doing dumb things or sacrificing themselves in order to save their female significant other and it’s seen as heroic. With Grace it’s done in a different way since she always knew she wouldn’t stay married to Chesterfield, and would have been planning on finding a way out of it as soon as she agreed to it. I feel like when the men are in the same situation they don’t really give their plans the same amount of thought.

Also I think Harps phrase was interesting when he said he didn’t want Grace to have taken on his life like that. He didn’t really mention the fact of her marrying rather than her being responsible for him. I just wonder if he’s supressing his feelings over her marrying Chesterfield and turning it into ‘I don’t want us to be responsible for each other’. He was willing to drag her into his shit in s1, but as soon as it comes to her doing things because she loves him he steps back from it (sidenote: this girl has saved his actual life literally like 5 times now). I think this is because he loves her but honestly thinks he’s a) going to get killed in a fight or b) get killed by the law when he has his revenge or c) go on the run forever because, well, he’s a wanted fugitive. Basically he tells Grace ‘I’m not a safe life for you’ because he feels he has no real kind of life to offer her, so he hates when love comes into the mix because he can’t be who she needs him to be/who he wants to be till all this is done.

other than that basically I loved their entire reunion and i loved her saving him yet again. (also: “I thought I’d never see you again.” “I never thought that.” JUST KILL ME)

Historically, they were believed to have fallen very much in love through their lives, regardless of how their marriage initially started. I think the show is going in a similar direction and Henry and Elizabeth are slowly realizing how similar they really are and how they actually understand one another more than anyone else at that mess of a court. Regardless of the show’s more dramatic interpretations of the characters’ emotions and motivations (because, after all, it is a TV drama, and every historical story ends up being altered in that way when it gets turned into a TV show...), I think their relationship is taking a more honest, sweet turn, similar to how history knows them and I’m terribly sorry for thinking that’s actually positive.

in the fashion the dress is almost the smallest important thing, is the personality too. the actors of TWP are good but they lack of the charisma of Max Irons or Rebecca Ferguson, they´re pure Hollywood, for that their image is brighter.

i think costumes is a highly important aspect to period drama, quality costumes are a huge draw for people watching period drama, and poorly and cheaply made costumes take away from the sense of place, as for rebecca fergus and max irons, rebecca was very good, howver i could never buy max irons’s edward, he never felt very much like a king to me and honestly rebecca has more chemistry with her brother anthony than with edward, while jodie and jacob have absolutely undenible scene stealing chemistry that easily makes up for the poorly written script

i hate Chesterfield and i ship Emberharp, do you think they will kiss each other this season?

First of, hi!! I love getting an ask about frontier, since the fandom is so small!

I love Emberharp too - Chesterfield is the worst but he’s also very interesting. In terms of the arc this series I think it all depends on him in a way. 

Grace is married to him now, so if he chooses he can really mess things up for her and make things difficult. He also keeps using her feelings for Harp against her - so will she risk putting Harp in more danger from Chesterfield by kissing him etc? I honestly don’t know. If Chesterfield found out it could go one of two ways: a) he gets mad and hurts Harp or someone else or b) he actually lets her go (I could go into this but in a general sense I think in his own twisted way Chesterfield loves Grace, or thinks he does. He seems to actually want for her to love him (all that talk of changing temprement last ep) so, there’s a possibility that if he realised the extent of Grace’s feelings for Harp he might actually be semi decent and allow her to be with him.

But that also sort of depends on whether or not Harp is ready for anything like that. I think if they did kiss it would be at the end of the series in a farewell or as a last chance as Harp is still intent on revenge.
