The Tutor List: Meet Ben
Here at Tutorspree, programming is one of our most sought-after subjects, and our programming tutors are among the best. Today, meet Ben, a developer who's versed in CSS/HTML, Linux, MySql, Python, web development, and more. We spoke with Ben about his experiences and goal as a tutor: to teach you how to think like a programmer.
TS: How has your work experience (lead developer at Slader, Humans vs. Zombies) helped you tutor?
BB: My work experience has helped me a lot, not in learning how to tutor, but in learning the ropes as a practicing programmer. With HVZ I've been the only programmer creating www.hvzsource.com, and at Slader I created the Python back-end and interactive front-end. I believe that a deep mastery of programming can only be learned by doing. I've found that having a mastery of the skills I teach helps me spot common problems and fundamental misconceptions much easier.
My father was a professor of mathematics and regularly tutored students - I learned how students learn by watching him, and I was able to put myself through college by working as a tutor. Now is really the first time I can combine my tutoring skills with a strong understanding of programming.
TS: What's your favorite programming language?
BB: My favorite programming language is Lisp - because it has a deep simplicity coupled with an incredible amount of power. I enjoy programming because I like creating and I like solving puzzles - programming is a wonderful way to combine the two.
TS: How does one "think like a programmer"?
BB: You think like a programmer by learning to think slowly and methodically - learning to break problems down, again and again until you reach the simplest problem you know how to solve, and then combining those solutions into greater solutions until your original problem is solved.
TS: Lastly... got any cool tutoring stories for us?
BB: My last student was one credit away from his 4-year degree and needed that degree to stay in the country. I like to think that by working together I was able to help him stay in America, and that probably changed the course of his life.

"Exactly what we had hoped for."
A ten-year-old recently started programming lessons with Eli, so we checked in with the parent to see how it was going. This is the response we got -- awesome.
The first lesson was great! [My son] was (and still is) extremely excited. He can't stop talking about what he has learnt and what he is planning to ask Eli to teach him next time. This morning when he woke up - the first thing that he did was go to his computer and add something to the html file that he created yesterday with Eli.
Eli - thank you so much - this is exactly what we had hoped for.
