Progress Report #3

Proper

Project Description:  The project will use and mix magazine collage, paper cut-out and construction paper as the primary components for materials to tell the story of a geek.The geek in question (Jared), given the nickname, Proper finds himself surrounded by labels and brands all given their specific purpose, function and identity to the great plane that is reality. One day, sometime after puberty, Proper’s world is shattered when he discovers that his ‘world’ is actually a constructed one forged by the expectations and stereotypes of those who threaten to weigh down the young dork’s ability to achieve his greatest form. After realizing he’s constantly categorized as too much of one thing or the other (too ‘white’ for the blacks, too black for the whites) in the two most prominent settings he engages in, Proper goes on a personal journey to pursue the path of the “Blerd”, vowing to never kneel to the grim restraints of The Haters.

Director/Co-Animator- Jared: Team Lead, who will map out, gather a majority of materials and provide direction for the project.

Post/Co-Animator- Jonah: Team Member, who will focus primarily on the editing and post-work of the progress made in the project.

Chief Animator- Alineh: Team Member, who will primarily provide insight on execution for the animating process.

Group Therapy:

Should the group ever happen to come across a disagreement, conversation will be used to merge ideas as a first attempt solution. We can also keep options not initially chosen in mind, in case later on we happen to find ways to incorporate elements of those previous ideas into the current one. All ideas are welcome and worth exploring for this project, and since we’re all a pretty chill set of people, we’ll be sure to leave plenty of room for each other to speak openly on what we think while still being respectful of each other’s ideas, should they differ.

Description: This film will conceptualize the story that Horacio Lira tells his daughter, Alli. The story involves Horacio recalling an instance in his youth on the Portuguese island of Madeira, when he faced the challenge of pulling a stubborn sheep down a mountain to his home for the annual sheep celebration. After the story is told, we are brought to the “present” timeline, where it becomes clear that an adult Horacio is recounting the story to his young daughter. She challenges him, asking questions about his story, which he converts into a lesson about hard work, persistence, and the migrant worker’s experience.

In Case of Disagreement: 

We decided that if our group disagrees about how the story should be told or shown, we should have an inclusive, civil discussion about it. We will be attentive and respectful to each others’ ideas and opinions and open to compromise. We also decided that if we are stuck on one particular issue that we can’t seem to find a solution to, the director will make the final decision, since it is her original idea and vision.

Progress Report #3

1.The Magic Trumpet!  

  By Shawn, Jasmine, Max and Kalyn.

3.Summary:

  This story is about Kalyn’s friend Sofia. She is Mexican and that serves as an inspiration for her music choices. Her story is broken down into three parts: The beginning, jazz, and, Mariachi, all forms of music she has played. This piece is auditory. We want the colors and music to move the audience as much as the music moves us. We haven’t interviewed her yet, but we’ve talked. We want you to know the story without getting lost in her interview. We are doing this story in dark silhouettes because music will be associated with different types of people, and that’s why it’s better if it will be faceless, but we still want to recognize her culture. We want to emphasize the material used in the mariachi uniforms. We also want it to be a colorful experience, and in order to do that, the backgrounds will have to be painted colorfully with watercolors. You will see her, and/or other musicians  play the instruments while the music is playing; dancers dancing gracefully in the background.  You will also see her reflection “metaphorically” shine through the piece. We want you to see the music as well as hear it and feel what she has felt throughout her life, through the experience of listening. You will get a feeling of what it is like to play an instrument, and enjoy the music. During the non-musical part of the video (the interview), we are going to show the more serious side of this occupation (through her band teacher).

5.Conflict Management:

  We have decided that if there are any general disagreements (which is a normal part of any creative process), we will attempt to find the solution by discussing the variety of options that we have, in order to find a diplomatic agreement that will lead to the progression of the project, and a solution that will be most effective in reaching the specific goals that we will establish, in a timely manner. Every group member’s main priority will be to make their contributions effective, and if there is a disagreement, we will respect everyone’s opinions, and try to find a solution that will seem agreeable to all. It’s also important to remember that there is a limited amount of time for the creation of this project, and therefore it’s very important to think and act in an effective and realistic manner, in the sense that sometimes it’s necessary to make sacrifices or find alternative solutions, that sometimes can bring even better results.

Problems we’ve discussed so far involved:

-The BackGround: Should we use color paint (or just some uniform background).

-Subject: There’s a lot to talk about and we’re not sure how to pinpoint the subject. We are leaning to focus on Sofia’s maniacal teacher.

-Interview: It is probably going to be too long. We could cut it down, or include some parts that are not stop motion (extract from Whiplasher, or some kind of still imagery).

-Shooting: We decided that downward shooting would be the most effective given the project.

-Cut-outs: We were debating on using actual pictures for the instruments or just silhouettes. We settled on a mix of both.

-Characters: We were contemplating using Joints (maybe tac’s) to move elements on-screen.

Progress Report #3: VIV

Project Description:  Our portrait tells the story of the all-powerful three year old, Vivian: Viv, for short. Viv’s favorite color is red. Viv’s favorite food is oatmeal. Viv’s favorite thing to play with is a tool kit. Viv has magical powers that let her shoot ice from her hands. Viv eats unicorn poop. Viv is very scared of flies. Viv can breathe underwater. Viv gets hurt sometimes, and then gets over it. 

Through animating Viv’s voice, our project aims to show the simplicity and lightheartedness that comes from being an infant. The artistic style will be limited to simple and clean line drawings. We will incorporate newspaper and magazine cut outs to hint at the things that evoke emotion in adults  (war, government, trump, etc). Viv is going to be represented as a dandelion throughout the animation, hinting towards both thematic spheres of growth and childhood. At the end of the film, Viv will blow on the dandelion, ultimately symbolizing the future and the inevitable loss of childlike innocence we all have. This will also nod towards the idea of being inspired by Viv, through the spread of the dandelion seeds, to put things in a more positive perspective.

Discussion Regarding Potential Conflict and Problem Solving:

The group has committed to being SUPER communicative with one another, so we know what’s going on (if someone can’t make it, needs extra help, messed up). We hope that through constant/productive communication habits we can avoid most problems that could arise and create tension. We will also make sure to try not to silence anyone’s artistic vision: we all have very similar ideas in some ways, and drastically different in others. The goal will be to find a balance between ideas and suggestions so that all four voices can be heard.
