Summary
The photo essay, Power and People, was derived from the Urban Future Manifestos, edited by Peter Noever and Kimberli Meyer. The point of departure from this reading stemmed from the idea of “the interstitial spaces where human control fails.” (Jahangeer, 2010, pp. 3). I interpreted this idea in terms of the capitalist social system we live in today. I began to explore the structures of the city and how they are used as mediums to control people, translating this into images.
Power and People acts as a metaphor for the social structures in a capitalist society. They are a representation of the daily lives of people within such a society. People within these structures are given a false sense of freedom. They believe that through hard work and gooddecision making success can be easily achieved. However, within the confines of the capitalist system people are really just small pawns in the wider scheme of powerful economic and political elites. These elites embed their ideals of capitalism into our everyday lives, guiding us along a path of economic growth. Breaking free from the confines of the capitalist structures allows creativity and success to flourish.

Critical Selfie - My Critical Perspective

This sentence inspired me to think about the places within the city where control has failed. I interpreted the spaces in the city as being controlling devices for people in power. The layout of the city guides our movements, the structure defines where we can and cannot go.
The spaces where human controls fail, act as symbols for flourishing creativity and total freedom.
The photos are a representation of the capitalist society we live in today. The structures of the city act as a metaphor for the social structures in society. These structures allow us to think we have total freedom, when in reality we are just small people working in favour for the powerful economic and political elites.
