[ambiance]

[Mike is asleep – then wakes up, sharply, with a gasp or shout]

MIKE: G-god… god damn it, not again..

[He moves, groaning while doing so]

MIKE: I can't keep doing this. [half laughing from stress] I-I can't sleep anymore. If these damn nightmares keep happening, I… I think I'm gonna lose it.

[he keeps half laughing, and then sobs]

MIKE: What am I gonna do? I can't lead my team like this. I'm going to disappoint them. Or- [voice tightens] Or I'm gonna make a mistake. I'll approve the wrong thing, or write something down wrong, and, and then somebody's gonna get hurt. I can't let that happen.

[ambiance]

MIKE: Maybe I should just.. quit. Quit while I'm ahead. I think people would understand. I'm old enough to retire for good, right? This is one last job before I throw in my hat. I could get away with it, right? I've got enough money to last me another thirty years. And I look and sound good enough to get married. Have a few kids. Keep them away from here and…

[Mike takes a deep breath, then shouts]

MIKE: I don't want to die here! What was I thinking?! That I could fix their mistakes, and make this place into some happy kid-friendly-place?! That nobody would ever get stuffed into a suit again because of me!? [panting] I'm an idiot! This place can't be fixed, can't be saved. It's rotten to the core! And we're all going to die, we're all going to die because I had to come back! Didn't I learn anything from that week?!

[Mike pants]

MIKE: I don't want to die. I've still got too much to do with my life. I want to fall in love, go on a cruise, something nice. Not get-get stuffed into a suit. No, not that. Never that. I thought I could escape-  I thought I could escape it, but I can't, because, I'm an idiot!

[Mike throws something]

[Mike starts crying]

MIKE: I can't do this on my own anymore

[ambiance, Mike crying]

[phone rings. Mike jerks, surprised]

MIKE: What…?

[phone rings]

MIKE: [sniffs] Who's calling me at 3 in the morning?!

[phone rings]

MIKE: That's… B's ringtone.

[Mike answers]

MIKE: Yeah? PHONE GUY: Hello, hello hello!

[Mike freezes, the blood draining from his face]

PHONE GUY: Hello hello!

[he tries to say something, but can't]

PHONE GUY: Hello hello! MIKE: Y-You…? PHONE GUY: Hello! MIKE: I… I forgot. You're still here, too. PHONE GUY: Hello, hello! Hey.. MIKE: I… I guess you heard all that huh? PHONE GUY: Uhhhh... MIKE: So you're- you're in here…? [pause] Wait. PHONE GUY: Uhhhhh.. MIKE: That dream I had, about-about dying… That wasn't in my head, was it?

[pause from Phone Guy]

MIKE: That was-was that… y-you?

[pause]

PHONE GUY: Yeaaaaaah.

MIKE: I… oh.

[pause]

MIKE: I'm… I'm sorry.

[pause]

MIKE: Does it… do you hurt?

[pause]

MIKE: You probably can't answer that, can you? The curse… PHONE GUY: Hello, hello hello. MIKE: I understand. [pause] Listen, I-I know you heard what I was talking about. And I-..I-I don't know what to do anymore. Can I keep doing this? I, I want to make you proud, but-

[pause]

MIKE: That's right. That's why I took this job. Not to show off or prove myself better than the other guys, but, to please you. And to make sure that no one would ever be hurt like you were, again. I've been dreaming of this job since I met you, well, 'met' you, if you get me, and… MIKE: I can't leave now. Not with my job undone. PHONE GUY: Hello, hello, hey.

[Mike takes a deep breath]

MIKE: It's okay. You can go back to TLB now. I’m okay. I'm-ll be okay. I'm staying, no matter what happens.

[pause]

PHONE GUY: Alright. Good night. MIKE: G'night.

[Phone Guy hangs up]

[Mike hangs up, too]

MIKE: Thank you.

I don't know what the hell just happened but I hope it never happens again. I just saw B running down the hall, looking like she was going to beat somebody up - and that's exactly what she was going to do! Except instead of a person I think it was going to be that damn box again. Oh, what I'd do to get rid of that thing...

She's calm down now but I think she's right. I don't think any of us are ready to try and cleanse the building of any quote-unquote negativity.

God, I just want this nightmare to be over with.
