We're so excited to be participating in Project AWARE this week, along with the Iowa DNR! This year's registration maxed out a while ago, and we're looking forward to talking with all of the participants about archaeology in Mitchell and Floyd counties while paddling the Cedar River. Because this is a rural area, there hasn't been a lot of development-related archaeology. This is when archaeologists really rely on land owners and collectors to provide context to their finds and help us build the story of Iowa's archaeological past. Here's a sample of some finds along or near the Cedar River in Mitchell and Floyd counties. We have evidence for sites as old as the early archaic period to the recent historic!
