“Okay. Sonic, you’ve got this...just tell her!”
A deep sigh filled the air as a certain blue hedgehog stared down at the lilac box in his grip. Sonic shifted his feet, slumping against the peeling bark of an old tired tree.
Sonic’s fingers fidgeted with the ominous item clasped in his gloved palms. It’s not like he hadn’t gone over this in his head hundreds of times, yet now that he’d finally found the perfect time to tell her...it suddenly felt like a storm of nerves was threatening to swallow him whole. But this was Amy? She’d never hidden her affection for him. Heck! They’d been together for 2 years! So why was he so scared?
The lilac box glared at him.
“Jeez...why is this so hard?” The hedgehog rubbed the side of his head, shoulders slumping. Sonic cleared his throat, tucking the box out of sight as he turned away. “Come on, you’ve got this.” He propped his arms up behind his head as he walked away, ready to face his biggest challenge yet.

“Ahh~”
A cheerful sigh filled the air. The gorgeous evening had swallowed the hills in golden streams of sunset and a swift wind rustled the trees surrounding an open clearing. Loose leaves flipped in the breeze, gently lifting to the now vibrant lavender sky.
Amy’s quills swayed lightly in the wind. They’d grown much longer over the years. Her fingers brushed the picnic blanket beneath her palms. She cast a glance to the side, where a woven wooden basket sat idly. Sweet and savoury scenes wafted from the basket and her stomach growled.
The girl frowned, raising her eyes to the trees bordering the picnic site. “Where is that Sonic?”
“Here and accounted for!” A familiar spiky silhouette emerged from the woods, his arm raised as he saluted her.
“It’s about time, I was beginning to think you got lost out there,” Amy placed a hand on her hip, tilting her head to the side with a smug grin.
Sonic scoffed, eyes glinting gleefully, “How can I get lost when I can smell those chili dogs from a mile away?” The hedgehog plopped down beside the girl.
“Uhuh,” Amy raised an eyebrow. “What took you so long?” The girl snickered as her hands dove into the picnic basket beside them.
Sonic gulped sheepishly, “I ahhh—heh, just got distracted by something,” He waved a nonchalant hand. Amy’s brows knitted together in curious concern.
“You sure?” The girl raised an eyebrow, “You look kinda nervous.”
“What? Nah—I’m all good, just hungry.” Sonic shrugged, praying to chaos he was keeping his cool. Amy wasn’t convinced, but the grumbling now emanating from both of their stomachs led her to drop the topic.
Taunting scents flooded from within the brown basket; salty, spicy, savoury delectable goodness mingling with the promise of something sweet. A moment of anticipation later, Amy presented the chili dogs. The two made giggly conversation as they ate. Sonic devoured his food in a matter of seconds, the girl beside him shaking her head when he choked. They chewed on chocolate chip cookies, laughing as they joked and reminisced on old and new adventures. By the time they’d finished eating, Sonic was resting soundly in Amy’s lap. The girl's jade eyes seemed to glow in the light of the night, and Sonic savoured her calm smile. Above her head of gently swaying quills, the sky stretched into an infinite sea of violet; a void scorched by a million glittering stars.
“The sky is so beautiful tonight,” Amy admired, bringing Sonic back to his senses. The girl tilted her jade eyes to face the hedgehog in her lap. Her irises were almost glowing under the sterling silver moon. “I wish we could do this all the time.” Sonic flushed mildly, lifting a hand to caress her cheek.
Tell her!
“We can!” Sonic burst out. Amy’s eyes widened in confusion, taken aback by the abrupt comment. The hedgehog had shot up from her lap, turning away. Sonic’s ears were flattened to the side of his head. She could practically feel the flushed embarrassment radiating off his spines.
“What’s wrong?“
“Heh—I didn’t mean for it to come out like that—“ Sonic sighed, sweat rolling down the sides of his head. The hedgehog turned around slowly, a small box now resting in his hand.
“Sonic-” Amy gasped, her cheeks turning a bright rosy red.
Is this?!
“Ames,” Sonic breathed, “You know I’m not good at this kinda stuff....” Amy's watery eyes watched him quietly, hands squeezed in her lap. This is why he’s been so nervous!
“Well...you're one of my best friends, a great fighter, compassionate and caring and...heh. This really isn’t my thing,” Sonic chuckled sheepishly. The girl before him sniffled, pearly tears swirling in her eyes.
“All I’m trying to say is...I wanna do these things with you all the time. Well, more than we already do. So...Amy Rose, will you marry—“
“Yes!” Amy exasperated, before he could even finish.
Sonic heaved a heavy sigh of relief, the weight of a thousand stones lifted off his shoulders. Smiling now, the hedgehog held out the lilac box in his hands, pulling back the lid. A shiny golden ring revealed itself in the silvery moonlight. Amy grinned at him, wiping her tears away as Sonic slid the ring gently onto her finger. The pink hedgehog shifted over quickly, slinging her arms around his neck.
“I love you so much.” Amy breathed, pressing her forehead against her lovers. Their hands and eyes locked in a loving embrace. Sonic leaned forwards, planting a swift and sweet kiss to his fiancé’s lips.
“I love you too.”
Far above, the wide sky continued its show of sparkling constellations. Each star; a radiant beacon amongst the dark navy night.
