Project 1 Process

Regarding the presentation on Monday, I think it was pretty good. The 20 seconds-per-slide issue was handled quite well, no substantial awkward silence was left. However, I have a regret that I could engage with the audience more by doing things like asking for feedback or Yes-No questions.

I continue to research on the problems that crossing legs (especially while studying) can be detrimental to human's health. And here is one recent study.

I met my friend again last Thursday and he was glad to hear that I chose the seat problem for my design brief. I have a feeling of being helpful and worth-doing.

Project 1 Process Documentation

After thinking a bunch about different problems I have come across in everyday life, I narrowed down the list to just a few. I originally was thinking of doing something that had to do with bed sheets getting tangled, or my coffee mug being the wrong fit, but I figured out a couple of other problems as well. I realized that I take notes off of online lecture videos and other materials a lot. I try to conserve paper by not printing every article I'm assigned to read or take notes on, so often times I find myself doing it off of my computer. However, there's a small problem with this. My spiral notebooks' metal binders can scratch my computer and keyboard, and they also will press keys and make them all messed up. This is annoying when you're in the middle of a video and your use of your notebook causes you to press an unwanted key that stops the video and pulls up something you don't want. I know you might think, "Well why don't you just take notes with your notebook next to your laptop?" I do this sometimes, but if I'm in a class where I need my computer and notebook, it usually has those teeny classroom desk tops that would be impossible to fit even a small notebook and laptop side by side. I don't enjoy taking notes on a word document, and with a video playing it's hard. You can't draw pictures and diagrams, and the information doesn't get received by your brain quite as well. So, my problem is this: is there a way to make taking notes on a laptop with your notebook better and easier?

Project 1 Process Documentation

I talked about this a little bit in my reflection post, but I recently had an idea of how the design of an everyday product may be improved. I was in bed, about to go to sleep, when I pulled up my sheet and it slipped from under my mattress, leaving my feet exposed. This happens to me all of the time, and it's really annoying. My bed gets left in a chaotic swirl of blankets, sheets, and pillows. I knew there must be a better way to do this, so I realized that if the top sheet was attached to the bottom (fitted sheet) on the bed, the top sheet wouldn't slip off and leave feet dangling out the bottom! I googled this, and found a few products that seem to be what I am thinking. This is just one thing I've thought about, there are many more!

One other thing I ran into was the fact that my Keurig coffee maker is too short to dispense coffee directly into my to-go coffee mug that I like to take to class in the mornings. I have to brew the coffee and have it go into a mug, then pour the mug into my to-go mug. It's not too much of a hassle, but I always end up spilling coffee, and it takes more time when I'm in a hurry. There is a taller version of the Keurig, but it's more expensive and as a college student I wouldn't want to spend more money. If there were some sort of a hose connector or spout that you could attach to the coffee dispenser, maybe it would be able to reach into my mug.

I know both of these ideas aren't too great, but they are both simple things that need a little fix. I'm clearly sort of lazy, or just bad at making my bed/making coffee, but these are what I've been thinking of so far!

I created two different moodboards for this project. The first is inspired by organizing stationary. The feel of it is naturalistic, drawing on real textures to communicate the category of the objects. The second board reflects a geometric approach. I drew inspiration from the Tetris game as I envision the objects being packaged in boxes appropriate to their size.
