Hullo! We’re back on a Thursday to get everything done! The guardian forgot about having to alter one piece so he brought a lighter to try to burn a piece...this is waaay too hard #difficult #burning #altered #project2a #thursday #totoro (at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville)
Project 2A
As a graphic design mayor, I think it would be important to target younger generations and show them the problem and consequences of their actions. By focusing on specific groups of people we could capture their attention easier and get them worried and involved with with the communities. By saying this I don’t wanna create a new drainage map for Miami, but create art that’s going to move them and worry about a cause. My target is millennial by using trends and a styles of art like digital street art, making posters that we could wheat paste around the city. This method would be useful to promote artists projects that are already on the path and get people involved, as well as create a platform to voice problems that we are interested on.
Hemmed and ironed and all done! This looks great! #project2a #totoro #screenprinting #handmade #class (at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville)

Project 2 Proposal
By Rashidat Edunjobi
1. I have two directions that I am struggling with for my project idea. My plan is to create posters with shocking images and embedded information to draw attention and impart knowledge. I want to paint images that are realistic, so as to better facilitate a connection or relatability with the audience. The first idea is for a series of posters with images of South Florida invasives juxtaposed with images of things that are considered “exotic.” Exoticism has always been a draw for people; this idea takes advantage of our tendency to stop and stare at things unfamiliar to us. The idea is to engage passersby and entice them to look closer. Layered on top of the images will be information on the invasives, how to recognize them, and what can be done to remedy them, if needed. The second idea is to create a series of posters of people living their lives (going to the beach, living in their homes/apartments, eating meals, etc.) with the direct consequences of our actions and choices surrounding them. For instance, people frolicking in a beach covered with trash. The images will be layered with facts and possible solutions that anyone can take part in to reduce our footprint on the Earth. Our culture of disposability removes us from the repercussions of the things we do, so it is easier to overlook the detrimental effects. The same can be said for gun violence; guns create a distance between the perpetrator and the victim, making it easier to pull the trigger. My goal, in either direction, is to make people stop and learn something in a way they are comfortable with: small snippets of information combined with arresting images.
2. I planned on using Stonehenge posters and painting with acrylics and perhaps pastels. I am most familiar with paint, but I am open to incorporating other methods, such as collaging, to accomplish my goals.
3. Before anyone can care about a cause, they have to know about it. Ignorance is a huge factor when considering the reasons people do not consider the consequences of their actions in relation to the climate. I believe that imparting information in the style that is most common today, gives people something to consider. In addition, adding easy things thy can do to help the cause becomes an entry point. Some may become more interested in the problems we’re are dealing with and the transition to activist may be aided by the small thing they started with after seeing a poster. The idea, when separated from the creative aspect, is not necessarily brand new, but it does attract the target audience in a creative way.
4. The target audience consists of people between the ages of 16 and 40. This is because they are the current future of the world. They will be the ones to inherit this Earth next; they have a better capacity and reason to want to change the current trajectory. They have the energy. All genders, ethnicities, and income levels are included. Some of the images may be mild to moderately sexual, so they target anyone attracted to whatever is depicted.
5. I want the posters to feel out of place and slightly shock viewers. Ideally, I would like an emotional response; things tend to stick better when we feel a certain way about them. I would love for the audience to consider their choices more carefully and to think about the future and the kind of world they want to live in.
6. The ideas were inspired by the brainstorming sessions we did and also some of the visiting artists, namely Misael Soto and Rachel Johnson. I was also inspired by the Beehive Design Collective. They created several handmade copies of posters and distributable information to further their causes. I am only one person, but the idea of a group of people taking on a job normally left to machines was really beautiful to me. The effort put into each piece would not be apparent to a viewer in an isolated environment, but that does not mean that it doesn’t exist.
7. Pollution and cross contamination are directly related to excessive human output and are currently harming our environments. Waters are rising in Miami and other places because of global warming, which is happening because of our high carbon dioxide output, which is happening because we live within a culture of disposability and materialism. We ignore the consequences because they are hidden away, and out of sight, out of mind. My ideas are part of the very first steps in getting people to care about making an effort towards sustainability and resilience.
8. Within my project, there will be specific facts about the poster content, not just generalizations. I would like to include the problem, the contributing factors, our role in the problem, some solutions (if there are any), how we can help, and maybe a way to learn more.
9. I have always been a learner. Without learning, we don’t grow as people. I would like to think that the general population wants to grow too. While I have never had contact with invasives prior to moving to Miami, it is a topic I am increasingly interested in. That and the idea that places are made to feel a certain way, based on aesthetics.
10. I am not sure if there is a direct way to measure success. Maybe if I put up the posters and kept track of how many people stopped to look at them. If absolutely nothing else, I would have achieved forcing people to be present within their environment at that moment. I could also create smaller versions of the posters for people to take with them. Keeping track of how many are taken could be another measure.
