Ok, the shirt is a little big, but she loves it! Samantha’s in stage 1 of diabetes. Without a cure she will, one day, be diagnosed. She has 4/5 of the autoantibodies that are type 1 markers. For my T1D, it currently costs me about $800 a month out of pocket for medical equipment, insulin and doctors visits. I’m not factoring the cost of clean foods like veggies and good quality protein which costs considerably more than living off of Ramen. That number also doesn’t factor in the 2 different insurance plans my family has me covered on or the cost of additional medications for other health issues. This disease feels impossible to manage some days and I’m often angry about how much I have to pay for a good quality of life instead of adding to my savings, taking vacations or just eating out. I work on acceptance every day but I continue to worry about the prices I’ve seen rise in the last 20 years and even had to give up taking the insulin that’s best for my body because neither of my plans will cover it and 1 bottle (I use 1 a month) retails for $250. Highs, lows and wide ranges of glucose levels are not exceptions but just living with Type 1 (yes, even if you are in excellent “control”). It bewilders me that people continue to hold on to antiquated ideas about all forms of Diabetes only affecting what you eat. #projectbluenovember (at Winter Park, Florida)

@projectbluenovember I’m gonna get this party started a couple days early! Diabetes affects 1.25 million Americans. This is something that we have to deal with everyday. All day. Even now as I post this I’m struggling to get my blood sugars up over 54. Every decision I make I have to weigh how it’s going to affect my sugars throughout the day. Diabetes doesn’t discriminate from age, gender, race, weight. It doesn’t care. I was almost 13 when I was diagnosed, this past August was my 10 years. It’s a daily struggle. I wish people would think about what they say before they say jokes about diabetes. It’s not a joke, it could literally take my life, as it does to others everyday. #t1d #diabetesawareness #projectbluenovember
