I don't care whether the magic comes from a movie, comic, TV show, anime, mythology, or even real-world occult traditions—it can be classified using Marvel's three magical sources:
Personal Magic: Drawn from the sorcerer's own life force, soul/mind/body, or inner spiritual energy (like activating latent human abilities through meditation and willpower)
Universal Magic Tapping into the ambient magical energy of the sorcerer's own universe/dimension (channeled through the caster as a focus)
Dimensional Magic: Source: Borrowed/entreatied from powerful beings, entities, or forces in other mystical dimensions. At times, mutant powers or Chi/Ki can also fit within these categories. I've studied magic systems since 1993, and this is the classification system that makes the most sense to me. Magic Schools For spellcasting, I prefer the AD&D school system, although I have modified it for my universe. My schools of magic are: Enchantment Elemental Divination Illusion (tricks the senses rather than the mind) Mental (charms, stuns, mind probes, etc.) Force (pure cohesive magical energy, such as Eldritch Bolts) Transmutation/Alteration Conjuration/Summoning Bio/Necromancy Dimensional Abjuration Universal Universal magic includes: Wild Magic Shadow Magic Invocation/Evocation Thaumaturgy (alchemy, artifice, sacred geometry) The Origin of My Power System Originally, I designed superpowers around Marvel's six Infinity Gems: Time Soul Power Space Mind Reality However, I eventually felt that the Reality Gem was too broad. During the 1990s I was introduced to White Wolf Publishing's Mage, whose Sphere system inspired me to rethink my own classification.
