types of love prompt list

I came up with this idea as I was writing a request feel free to reblog if you want to use it!

eros or “erotic love”: this first kind of love gives to the idea of passion and desire, especially sexual. This form of love can be dangerous, however,  as it involves a ‘loss of control’ through primal impulses. That is why it is such an intense form of love that arouses romantic and sexual feelings.

philia or “affectionate love”: representing friendship, as well as considered to be far above eros because it was considered a love between equals. It involves the feelings of loyalty among friends, free from the intensity of sexual attraction.

storge or “familial love”: represents love without physical attraction, and although similar to philia, storge is primarily associated with kinship and familiarity. It is a natural form of affection between parent and child, and vice versa. It can be an obstruction when friends or family do not align with or support a journey.

ludus or “playful love”: a playful form of love, with a bit of eroticism in it, usually the affection between a pair of young lovers. It usually pertains to the early stages of falling in love (ex: a fluttering heart, flirting, teasing, and feelings of euphoria). This playfulness is one of the secrets of keeping this childlike innocence alive, yet mostly lost in long-term relationships.

mania or “obsessive love”: a type of love that leads into madness or obsessiveness when there is an imbalance of eros and ludus. It can be seen as way to rescue themselves, reinforcing their own value to those who experience it. If the other partner fails to reciprocate this same love, issues like codependency occur; as they could become possessive; desperately “needing” their partners. 

pragma or “enduring love”: a type of love that has developed over time beyond physical and casual and becoming a unique harmony. It can be found in both romantic and platonic bonds that have endured for so long, which means it is also not easily found a lot of energy being spent trying to find love but not enough being spent to maintain said love. It’s an effort from both sides, as both learned to compromise and have shown patience and tolerance for a relationship to work.

philautia or “self love”: in order to care for others, one must care for themselves. This is not the unhealthy vanity or self-obsession on fame and fortunate like narcissism, however. It is self-love in the healthiest form and involves a deep understanding that once you have the strength to love yourself and be comfortable in your own skin, you are able to give love to others. But, the opposite is also true; if you cannot love your own self, then you cannot properly give that love to others. 

agape or “selfless love”: it is the highest and most radial type of love; one that is selfless and unconditional. It can sometimes be referred to as a ‘spiritual’ love. It’s a love bigger than ourselves; a boundless amount of compassion, an infinite empathy. Agape is a love that is free from desires and expectations of others. This love can be found regardless of the flaws or shortcomings of other people, it can be felt like a love that accepts, forgives, and believes for our greater good.
