Side Projects: Textile freedom. December 2017.
Some while back I realised I was lacking some ‘easy’ stitching to occupy my evenings particularly when I was blocked by working on what I might under certain circumstances refer to as my ‘proper work’. When the work is flowing, it’s easy to do and not encumbered by multiple decisions. But, when there are more questions than answers and the work slows and stops, I wanted to be able to turn to sewing that had less self-imposed pressure attached to it.
This gave me the perfect excuse to rifle through folders of old work in progress and salvage many half started projects. I resolved to commit to complete them, regardless of whether I felt they were ‘worthy’ and at the very least hone some of my sewing skills at the same time.
I have found the act to be entirely pleasurable – and even better – I have actually finished some pieces which has brought with it a wonderful sense of achievement, giving scope and perspective to what I can achieve when there are no ‘rules’ to follow, only the pleasure of doing.
