Imam al-Husayn [a] said, in a sermon,

"All praise is due to Allah, whatever Allah wills, and there is no power except by Allah, and may Allah send salutations upon his Messenger.

Death has been foisted upon the children of Adam the way a necklace adorns the neck of a girl. How great is my longing for my predecessors, not unlike the yearning of Jacob for Joseph. It has been chosen for me, a destiny which I am going to meet.

It is as though my limbs have been torn apart by wild beasts between Nawawis and Karbala, so they will fill - by killing me - their hollow pouches and famished bellies.

There is no escaping a day inscribed by the Pen. The pleasure of Allah is our pleasure – the Ahl al-Bayt. We will be patient upon His trials and He will recompense us the reward of the patient ones.

The flesh of the Messenger of Allah will not be separate from him, rather, it will be gathered for him in the holy assembly. His eyes will be delighted by them, and he will fulfill his promise to them.

Therefore, whoever has decided to invest his heart in us and has resolved his self to the meeting with Allah – then let him set out with us – for I am setting out at dawn’s break, God-willingly."

خطبة الأمام ( ع ) : وفي مثير الأحزان بعد المحاورة السابقة : ثم قام خطيبا فقال : الحمد لله وما شاء الله ، ولا قوة الا بالله ، خط الموت على ولد آدم مخط القلادة على جيد الفتاة وما أولهني إلى أسلافي اشتياق يعقوب إلى يوسف ، وخير لي مصرع انا لاقيه ، كأني بأوصالي تقطعها عسلان الفلوات بين النواويس وكربلا ، فيملان مني أكراشا جوفا وأحوية سغبا ، لا محيص عن يوم خط بالقلم ، رضا الله رضانا أهل البيت نصبر على بلائه ويوفينا أجور الصابرين ، لن تشذ عن رسول الله لحمته ، وهي مجموعة له في حظيرة القدس ، تقر بهم عينه وينجز بهم وعده ، من كان باذلا فينا مهجته ، وموطنا على لقاء الله نفسه ، فليرحل معنا فاني راحل مصبحا إن شاء الله

Don't be surprised but of all the love stories, the one that fascinated me the most is what transpired between Yaqub (Jacob) and Yusuf (Joseph). It just gives me chills everytime their thoughts come across. If love were to be defined in a tale then there's nothing more vivid than this. Not just the sacred relationship of a father and a son, there's more to it. The unbreakable bonding, the deep connection, the timeless exchange of subtleties, the elixir of hope, the realization of dreams, the invisible guidance, the miraculous healing, the love that wins in the end and the union after decades of separation. One can only be enthralled at such a love affair. Peace be upon them and the wayfarers that's longing to be on that path...

Death and its messenger

The Prophet Yacub/Jacob(S) befriended the angel of death as the angel frequently visited him. One time Jacob asked the angel of Death, "Are you a visitor or are have you come to take my soul?" by which the Angel of Death replied, "Only a visitor". 

So Jacob asked him a favor, that he send a few messengers to warn him of his death before the Angel arrives to take it from him. 

As the days went by and Jacob finally reached a frail age, the Angel of Death visited him once more. Jacob asked again, "Are you a visitor or have you come to take my soul?" by which the Angel of Death announced that this was their last meeting and he came to take him to the next world.

Jacob then was bewildered by which he asked: "Have you not promised me to send a few messengers before you came?"

The Angel then said that he had already sent many messengers by which he finally announced:

بياض شعرك بعد سواده وضعف بدنك بعد قوته, وانحناء جسمك بعد استقامته 

"Your hair had whitened after it had been black, your body had weakened after you had much strength, and the curvature of your back after it had been firm and strong".
