Punishment

We had this amazing discussion in class today about punishment and now I'm just so curious because people have very different takes on what kind of punishment they would like society to give out etc

So I wanted to do a poll to see peoples opinions on here knowing that we are all from very different places. I'm curious. What kind of punishment would you want your country to give out?

Tough on crime

Wanting the hardest punishment possible to scare off others from doing the same and to send a message to the criminal that what they did is wrong and condemned. I want them to stay in prison for as long as possible.

Proportional

The punishment should be proportional to the crime they committed, lesser crimes should have lesser punishment, worse crimes should have worse or longer punishment. They shouldn't be able to return to society until they can prove that they regret their actions fully and have learned their lesson.

Rehabilitation

Lesser punishment for criminals in general with the focus being on rehabilitating them to return to society as better people.

*All of these are based on different theories of criminal justice and there isn't one right answer. This is what we'd call "feelling justice", in a sense. It's about what you would feel is just and right in a situation and what you yourself would consider to be best for society.
