Do you write proposals?
I’m often asked this question. Do you write proposals? The answer is a resounding “No”. I am a Proposal Manager, my job is to manage the proposal process, not write the proposal document. This is not to say that I will not occasionally pitch in and write a section or put pen to paper to create a cover letter with flourish. A proposal is the true definition of a project in that it is a Planned set of interrelated tasks to be executed over a fixed period and within certain cost and other limitations, such as Government evaluation criteria in the case of proposal. As a Proposal Manager, I’m essentially a Project Manager whose project is the proposal. My mission is to ensure that the project is resourced properly, on budget, and on schedule. Proposal Managers are responsible for providing section specs to subject matter experts, funneling drafts through the editorial process , and even the delicate job of explaining how someone’s proposal magnum opus just isn’t going to meet the Government’s evaluation criteria.
What do you say when you are asked “do you write proposals”?
