These kind of memes mean well BUT we need to squash this ignorance immediately!
Most of those big time pastors are not even on the church payroll. They get their money from books and merchandise. Those products are taxed by the way.
Yes, I am the biggest critic of “Prosperity Preaching”, but we don’t need the government to fix a church problem. This issue needs to be fixed with sound doctrine. Christians like the Bereans found in Acts Chapter 17 are the fix. They studied the Scriptures on their own and had good questions for their leadership.
A change of the tax law is only going to hurt small town pastors like me. I am currently bi-vocational and work 60 to 80 hours a week. I work 40 hours for Caesar and another 30 hours for the church proper. I have done this for ten years without EVER taking a dime! I don't have dreams of getting rich off the backs of church people! I am hoping to quit my day job in a few years. I do hope to be working for the people full time without my attention being divided!
There is currently a tax loophole for small time pastors. That loophole allows for a very modest stipend for my house allowance. I would still be facing a forty thousand dollar cut in salary if I quit my day job. (In other words, I would not be getting rich by any means!) Changing the laws could easily hurt guys like me! We are just surviving trying to meet the needs of growing congregations! If you look at the numbers, only a few have lost their way.
(The above picture is my family. We had just unloaded all of our church equipment from my Honda for Sunday Service. I should start a series, “Real Preachers of Hoodbridge!”)
There is no law that will cure ignorance. Tax reform can’t fix that. We have to fix this mess “In House”. Remember separation of church and state doesn’t just protect the government. The separation principle also protects the church! Make no mistake though. If we don’t fix this, the government will try and we know they will make a mess!
