#otd, 100 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt died at @sagamorehillnhs, in New York. When he ascended to the presidency in 1901 he was the youngest person to do so and ushered in a progressive era of reform. Part of that wave of reform was his work in preserving the scenic and historic wonders of this country as part of the future National Park Service. In Teddy’s words: “Leave it [wilderness] as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, and for all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American... should see." To me, he remains the perfect example of a progressive American president who worked toward the common good. He is a complicated figure, for sure, but his contributions to enshrining American identity in wilderness are incomparable to any other American politician. Valuing the Aesthetics of Nature: The Role of the Visual Artist in the American Conservation Movement

We headed into the woods of Maine, just as the landscape painter Frederic Church had in the late 19th century, brimming with inspiration after a visit to Church’s Camp Rhodora on Millinocket Lake. Some of us were still reflecting on what we learned during the previous two-day Symposium, Valuing the Aesthetics of Nature: The Role of the Visual Artist in the American Conservation Movement, at which Church and Katahdin were frequent subjects. This excursion, led and facilitated by intrepid hiker and Maine Appalachian Trail Land Trust volunteer Deborah Carroll, as well as artist Evelyn Dunphy, took us to Katahdin Wilderness Camps, a location often visited by Church and his friends.

Katahdin Wilderness Camps is a special place, located on the Katahdin Lake Trail, a 3.3 mile hike in from a parking area on the southeast side of Baxter State Park. The Camps were established in 1885 with many of the cabins built in the 1920s according to Holly Hamilton, who operates the site along with her husband Bryce. The Katahdin Lake area including the Wilderness Camps is a relatively recent addition to the park, having been incorporated in 2006 with the support of contemporary artists like Dunphy through the Campaign for Katahdin Lake. The area is nearly surrounded by one of the newest National Park Service units Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, celebrating its one year anniversary this month.

Many in our group of eleven were knowledgeable of the arts, history, and land conservation policies and practices, and willing to share that knowledge as we walked. Numerous discussions ensued about the importance of protecting natural and cultural sites such as the Katahdin Woods. It became clear to all of us that immersive experiences and the access to sites such as the Wilderness Camps are critical to the appreciation of the natural and cultural assets of a region.

Hiking with artists and art historians turned us all into art students for the day observing the landscape with new eyes and using our cameras to capture the scenes around us. Katahdin was once again the subject, and we added to the catalog of more than a century of images of this spectacular place. Immersive educational experiences, whether gallery installations, night-time tours, or multi-day hikes on field trips like this, confirm my dedication to the importance of conservation and preservation of critical natural landscapes.

It also convinced me that you can visit the same site multiple times, but never really see it the same way twice.
