The #Havasupai landscape crosses a large elevational and resource gradient and they were once known as reliable food providers with a very varied diet. Today their generosity is evident as they welcome thousands of people every year to visit their blue-green waterfalls. The trail to Supai Village has been closed but will open for the Peach Festival on Thursday! • • These waterfalls are fed by groundwater that lies deep below a plateau that uranium mining company Energy Fuels would like to exploit. Evidently, wildlife DOES frequent this area. Maybe the critters didn’t want to hang out around your drill rigs so that’s why you didn’t see them? Just a thought. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• In this drought stricken year, why wouldn’t wildlife try desperately to access a reliable water source? ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• US Geological Society research has revealed that Western spadefoot tadpoles in Canyon Mine’s water storage pond contain toxic levels of arsenic and selenium and are bioacculumulating arsenic, selenium, lead, thallium, and uranium. It’s all connected. Mule deer and mountain lions travel between Grand Canyon and the San Francisco Peaks, following ancient routes that pass right near Canyon uranium mine and through the Red Butte Traditional Cultural Property. They depend on this area being largely free of roads, noise, and impacts so that they can find food, water, resting sites, and mates.
