the first thing I thought of when I'd read the description a few times was Radical Face?? they have most (all?) of their music on youtube and I think it goes very well with what you said! A little mysterious, a little dark... I really like it. But if you're looking for instrumental stuff, no clue :/ except maybe Explosions in the Sky? I listen to both instrumentals and stuff with lyrics when writing but ahh I thought I was better at this. Hope you find something! :)
thanks! you know I’d actually forgotten how much I liked Radical Face so thanks for that! ‘Welcome Home Son’ actually works with the feel really well. It doesn’t have to necessarily be instrumental, like I’ve got Tam Lin (Anais Mitchell), Molly Ban (Alison Krauss), Wardruna, Agnes Obel next to Ramin Djawadi and Saint-Sæns so it’s more about feel than anything else.
So it’s basically a big mixing pot of songs that have a sort of ‘plaintive’ melancholy to them, sort of the feeling of walking down a beach alone in a squall, with the white horses tumbling in (so unnecessarily specific haha but Radical Face definitely fit the bill)
also found this song recently that works really well
