Halfway through The Rules Do Not Apply by Ariel Levy (in slovak translation) and I have to say I’m really liking it! Two days ago I read the first 50 pages in one sitting and her writing is amazing. Although I always feel weird commenting on an author’s writing whenever I’m reading a translation, because yes, the words and the style are the author’s, but the translator might have had to change some sentences around to fit the target language, or to fit the page layout or simply there were not the right words to convey the right emotion. Nevertheless, I am really applauding the translator of this because the sentences just flow so naturally, nothing feels put of place to me, of that makes any sense. As for the book itself and the contents, Levy writes very candidly and matter-of-factly, nothing she writes feels out of place, there’s nothing that should be taken out or added in. Although sometimes I have a feeling Levy is a bit too self-centered, that even though it’s a memoir, it feels a bit self-indulgent. She just tells you everything that happened to her without much thought, but maybe I’d like a bit more awareness of what her actions might be causing to other people. But that’s just my personal opinion. #ariellevy #therulesdonotapply #nonfiction #protivsetkympravidlam #absynt #nonfictionbooks #memoir #memoirs #books #bookstagram #coffeeandbooks #coffeeandbook #booksandcoffee #coffee https://www.instagram.com/p/CP57sx7rwTA/?utm_medium=tumblr
