How do you respond to people who state that atheism is just a skip away from complete immorality? That if there’s no ‘higher power’ to answer to, then all of the morals people profess to be eternal are really just based on the whims of our human society, and therefore subject to whatever the people feel is ‘right’ at any given moment, which can easily lead to pedophilia and bestiality, etc. things that most societies condemn ?

As someone who claims to be both a theist and accept evolution, you tell me: exactly how successful do you think our evolutionary predecessors would have been with all the rampant murdering, thieving and raping the religious seem to think was going on before these god myths?
We have morality because we have empathy. At least I do. (Usually. When bullshit like this doesn’t stretch it super-thin.) We act morally because it benefits the success of the species.
If you think morality is only what your god says is right, then either of two things is true:
Morality is only the arbitrary choices of your god. It thought slavery was neat before, it could again. Tell me that Ray Comfort is right (link), I dare you.
Things are moral regardless. Your god is just the messenger - no revelation, only retelling. Your god is morally worthless.
I would rather the “whims” of a human society, since we are the ones who have determined that genders, races, sexual orientations, etc should all be treated equally and respectfully, and that slavery is abhorrent.
Your god never came back to establish this. We did. We did it in direct violation of its abominable, repugnant scripture. We stopped the stonings, not your god. We stopped treating women like property. We determined that it didn’t matter if people are gay. We said that 50 shekels for raping someone, and slaves being expected to obey their Earthly masters aren’t acceptable positions, despite how adamantly the bible insists upon them. Your vile, grotesque scripture still says the same appalling shit it said 2000 years ago (purportedly).
